having been absorbed by radm. daniel v gallery since i was in jr hs, i was pleased as punch to find messrs. gilliland & shenk and their fine work in print. having read 8 bells & alls well (adm. dans autobiography), i thought i knew the adm. well, even exchanging letters with him. with care for their subject, the authors have fleshed out the interesting and fun life that dan gallery led while in the navy and in retirement. i frequently compare him to fr. andy greeley (another chicagoan) as both men are very independent, bright and determined in two areas that generally do not brook characters of their sort (the church and the navy). anyone who has read u505, 8 bells, or clear the decks will get their freak on, gallery-wise. i am ordering a copy of shenk's new work based on adm. dan's journals from his european tour, titled "playship of the world". i anticipate a gangbusters read. for all who have visited u505 in chicago, these books lay bear the intricate soul of a fun, furious, fine gentleman who made history on land and sea (and air! how many folks do you know who fell out of a plane and wrote about it!). enjoy!
