About Classroom in a Book

Adobe GoLive 5.0 Classroom in a Book is part of the official training series for Adobe graphics, Web, and publishing tools developed by experts at Adobe Systems. The lessons are designed to let you learn at your own pace. If you're new to Adobe GoLive, you'll learn the fundamental concepts and features that you'll need to master the program. If you've been using Adobe GoLive for a while, you'll find Classroom in a Book teaches many advanced features, including tips and techniques for using this exciting Web design tool.

Although each lesson provides step-by-step instructions for creating a specific project, there's room for exploration and experimentation. You can follow the book from start to finish, or do only the lessons that correspond to your interests and needs.

Prerequisites Before using the Adobe GoLive 5.0 Classroom in a Book, you should have a working knowledge of your computer and its operating system. Make sure that you know how to use the mouse and standard menus and commands, and also how to open, save, and close files. If you need to review these techniques, seethe printed or online documentation included with your Windows or Mac OS documentation.

Installing the program

You must purchase the Adobe GoLive software separately. For complete instructions on installing the software, see the Introduction to the Adobe GoLive 5.0 User Guide.

Navigation Services

The Navigation Services feature changes the appearance and behavior of the Open and Save dialog boxes. This feature is always available at the system level, and can be controlled on an individual application basis.

Due to conflicts between Navigation Services and Mac OS 8.6 and earlier, the lessons in this book do not use Navigation Services. Adobe strongly recommends deactivating the Use Navigation Services option. By default, Adobe GoLive does not use Navigation Services. However, if you need to deactivate this option, choose > Edit > Preferences > User Interface > Display, and deselect it.

Installing the Classroom in a Book fonts

To ensure that the lesson files appear on your system with the correct fonts, you may need to install the Classroom in a Book font files. The fonts for the lessons are located in the Fonts folder on the Adobe GoLive 5.0 Classroom in a Book CD. If you already have these on your system, you do not need to install them. If you have ATM (Adobe Type Manager), see its documentation on how to install fonts. If you do not have ATM, installing it from the Classroom in a Book CD will automatically install the necessary fonts.

Copying the Classroom in a Book files

The Classroom in a Book CD includes folders containing all the electronic files for the lessons. Each lesson has its own folder, and you must copy the folders to your hard drive to do the lessons. To save room on your drive, you can install only the necessary folder for each lesson as you need it, and remove it when you're done.

To install the Classroom in a Book files:

1 Insert the Adobe GoLive 5.0 Classroom in a Book CD into your CD-ROM drive.
2 Create a folder named GL CIB on your hard drive.
3 Copy the lessons that you want to the hard drive:

  • To copy all of the lessons, drag the Lessons folder from the CD into the GL CIB folder.

  • To copy a single lesson, drag the individual lesson folder from the CD into the GL CIB folder. If you are installing the files in Windows, you need to unlock them before using them. You don't need to unlock the files if you are installing them in Mac OS. 4 In Windows, unlock the files that you copied:

  • If you copied all of the lessons, double-click the Unlock.bat file in the GL CIB/Lessons folder.

  • If you copied a single lesson, drag the Unlock.bat file from the Lessons folder on the CD into the GL CIB folder. Then double-click the Unlock.bat file in the GL CIB folder.

I found this book to be very helpful in introducing the functions and capabilities of GoLive. The lessons are fast-paced and clearly presented. I think this is a very good book, and I recommend it to anyone who is just beginning to use GoLive.

This book as a self help self paced guide to learning the program falls far short of teaching. The book and the lesson plans leave out important imformation about GoLive. If you're using a PC, even if you unlock the lesson plans 2 of the chapters don't work. If your following their Steps 1-5 process they forget to tell you about steps 2 or 3 in more that one instance, leaving you to figure out the process. Adobe's technical writers wrote this book but, and it's obvious they never had to use it. In several of the chapters you need to defer to the users manual or online help to decipher what they want you to do. I'm using this book in a college classroom where my opinion is shared by all in attendance. I've used a lot of self help books, this one I wouldn't recommend to anyone!
