About the Author

Maria T. Codina Leik, MSN, ARNP, FNP-C, AGPCNP-BC, is the president and principal lecturer at National ARNP Services, Inc. (npreview.com). Well known for her ability to simplify complex concepts for her students, she is a popular speaker and educator. Ms. Leik taught previously in the nurse practitioner (NP) program at Florida International University Graduate School of Nursing. She is board certified by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) and the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners Certification Board (AANPCB) in two specialties: family NP and adult-gerontology primary care NP. She is an experienced NP with more than two decades of clinical practice. In addition to her two NP certification review books published by Springer Publishing Company, Ms. Leik is the author of chapters in two NP textbooks and is a member of Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing.

Description: This book offers a very focused review for those preparing to take the Adult-Gerontology Nurse Practitioner Certification exam, but also for those who have taken the exam but need a quick resource to find the answers. The improvements in this update include three new chapters, on gerontology and long-term care, culture and spiritually related health beliefs, and evidence-based medicine and epidemiology. This edition also includes an online component, but I was unable to access it.
Purpose: The book provides a systematic way to study for the certification exam, whether it is the ANCC, or the AANPCB. It allows students to read the literature then follows up with questions and quizzes to reinforce the learning process. Rationales are provided for the correct answers, along with a question dissection section.
Audience: Although the audience is students preparing to take their certification exam, the book is also an excellent resource for assisting in clinical practice, especially with its adult and gerontology focus. The format of the book allows practitioners to take clinical information and step through what needs to be done. It begins with the clinical picture, objective findings, and then a treatment plan including medications and dosages. The author along with the contributors and reviewers make a formidable team of experts.
Features: The title truly encompasses the essence of the book. It goes through the human body by system, noting what is normal and what is abnormal. In the gerontology portion, it provides specific examples of the differences between the older adult body and the younger body. It enables readers to see the normal and the abnormal and what should require further analysis. The book does have pictures, but they are not in color, which can make it difficult to recognize in real life.
Assessment: Although I was unable to access the website, the book alone is excellent. Each chapter enables readers to review a system, gives tips on how to complete the exam, and even provides clinical pearls. The end of the book has pages of questions for readers to answer followed by the correct answers, including rationales.
