The purpose of this book is to extend and update the knowledge of the reader to the basic concepts of modern digital and data communications systems and networks, optical fiber communications systems, terrestrial and satellite radio systems, and both wireline and wireless telephone communications systems. The book was written so that a reader with knowledge in basic electronics and electronic communications principles and an understanding of mathematics through the fundamental concepts of calculus will be able to grasp the topics presented. Numerous examples emphasize the most important concepts. Questions and problems are included at the end of each chapter, and answers to selected problems are provided at the end of the book.
This edition of Advanced Electronic Communications Systems provides a modern, comprehensive coverage of the field of electronic communications. Although nothing has been omitted from the previous edition, there are significant additions, such as three new chapters on telephone circuits and systems, two new chapters on cellular and PCS telephone systems, and three new chapters on the fundamental concepts of data communications and networking. In addition, numerous figures have been added and many figures have been updated.
Chapter 1 introduces the reader to the basic concept of optical fiber transmission lines and lightwave propagation. Chapter 2 describes the fundamental concepts of digital modulation, including comprehensive descriptions of amplitude-shift keying (ASK), frequency-shift keying (FSK), phase-shift keying (PSK), quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM), and differential phase-shift keying (DPSK). Chapter 2 also introduces the student to trellis code modulation and gives a comprehensive description of probability of error, bit error rate, and error performance.
Chapters 3 through 5 cover the fundamental concepts of data communications circuits and describe basic networking fundamentals, such as topologies, error control, protocols, hardware, assessing techniques, and network architectures.
Chapters 6 and 7 describe the basic concepts of digital transmission and multiplexing. Chapter 6 describes pulse code modulation, while Chapter 7 describes time-division multiplexing of PCM-encoded signals and explains the North American Digital Hierarcy and the North American FDM hierarchy. Wavelength division multiplexing of light waves is also introduced in Chapter 7.
Chapters 8 through 10 give a comprehensive description of telephone instruments, signals, and wireline systems used in the public telephone network. Chapters 11 and 12 describe the basic concepts of wireless telephone systems, including cellular and PCS.
Chapters 13 through 15 describe the fundamental concepts of terrestrial and satellite microwave-radio communications. Chapter 13 describes analog terrestrial microwave systems; Chapters 14 and 15 describe digital satellite systems.

The book was written so that a reader with previous knowledge in basic electronic principles and an understanding of mathematics through the fundamental concepts of calculus will have little trouble understanding the topics presented. Within the text are numerous examples that emphasize the most important concepts. Questions and problems are included at the end of each chapter. Answers to selected problems are provided at the end of the book.
Advanced Electronic Communications Systems, Fifth Edition, provides a comprehensive and modern coverage of the field of digital communications. The most important and extensive changes to this edition occur in the chapters that deal primarily with digital communications systems such as Chapters 2, 5, 6, 8, and 9. In addition, Chapter 10 is a new chapter dedicated entirely to cellular and PCS telephone systems. The major new topics and enhancements incorporated into this edition, by chapter number, are as follows:
- Optical fiber communications has been moved from Chapter 10 to here. The introduction and several sections throughout this chapter have been rewritten and several new sections have been added, including sections on light sources, optical power, optical sources, and link budget.
- The sections on digital amplitude modulation, frequency shiftkeying,continuous-phase frequency shift keying, and M-ary encoding have been rewritten and a new ' section on trellis encoding has been added.
- This chapter is essentially the same as in the previous edition except for the addition of a new section on CCITT modem recommendations.
- This chapter remains essentially the same as in the previous edition.
- The introduction and several sections throughout this chapter, including the sections on advantages and disadvantages of digital transmission and pulse code modulation, have been rewritten and a new section on PCM line speed has been added. Also, several figures have been modified.
- The introduction and several sections throughout this chapter, including the sections on time-division multiplexing and T1 digital carrier systems, have been rewritten. New sections on extended superframe format and wavelength-division multiplexing have been added.
- The introduction has been rewritten along with parts of several other sections, including the advantages and disadvantages of microwave communications, diversity, protection switching, fading, free-space path loss, and fade margin.
- The introduction and several sections throughout this chapter have been rewritten, including the sections on history, satellite orbits, satellite elevation categories, satellite orbital patterns, geosynchronous satellites, antenna look angles, and footprints. New to this edition are sections on Kepler's laws, Clarke orbits, and limits of visibility.
- Minor modifications have been made to the introduction and several other sections throughout this chapter. Significant changes and additions have occurred in the section on satellite radio navigation and Navstar GPS.
- This new chapter provides a comprehensive coverage of mobile telephone systems, including analog and digital cellular telephone (AMPS), the CDMA personal communications system (PCS), and the Iridium personal communications satellite systems (PCSS).

I own the third edition of the text. The updated version has changed the order of contents yet all the basic underlying principles are still retained. This is an invaluable reference material that I have used in my past work as a field technician to better grasp, and effectively test optimize, and maintain advanced communications systems.
