Editorial Reviews

This is a collection of reviews on several aspects of clinical neurosurgery. The reviews are grouped into two parts: advances -- areas where changes in practice or disease patterns are occurring; and standards -- a review of basic subjects and techniques. The purpose is to present important recent advances in neurosurgery and in-depth reviews of established knowledge. The reviews are intended to assist young neurosurgeons in their postgraduate training. A good review of an important subject is always beneficial, and the editors meet the objectives very well. This is the 26th volume in a series intended for residents, but also for any neurosurgeon who may want to review a particular area in-depth. The editors are among the leaders of European neurosurgery, and the contributors are well chosen experts in their fields. The book is divided in to two parts. In the first, contributors cover several areas in which advances have been made, concentrating on two relatively uncommon surgical methods of treating epilepsy. This field indeed needs to be brought to the awareness of more neurosurgeons and the inclusion in this book is timely. The second part is a review of several aspects of vascular neurosurgery that are important for every practicing neurosurgeon. The contributors conclude with an authoritative review of the surgical treatment of lumbar spondylolisthesis. The illustrations are uniformly good. The European Association of Neurosurgical Societies continues to sponsor this useful and well-written series of advances and technical standards in neurosurgery. Fortunately for the American reader, English has become the accepted language of communication within the Europeanneurosurgical community. Excellent texts like this one are therefore accessible. The format of this book is convenient. While the series cannot replace a comprehensive textbook, it nevertheless has a high educational value, allowing the publication of very detailed and thorough reviews rarely seen in the monthly journals.
