A very entertaining book by Conan Doyle.

I was looking forward to reading these stories by Arthur Conan Doyle since I heard about them in an e-mail from Barnes & Noble. I ordered this edition based on its availability and page count. I wss disappointed at the form this edition took when it arrived. My primary complaint is with the quality of this editon. On an inside page, the publisher states that this edition is a reproduction of a 1903 edition. If so, it is a poor reproduction which looks like the original book was placed on a copy machine and copied without any attempt at quality control. The publisher admits that many pages contain flaws from the copying process and passes them off as making the edition "culturally important." I disagree, believing that such flaws lower the value of this edition. Examples: Conan Doyle's Preface breaks off in mid-word at the bottom of a page and is not resumed on the next page. The last few stories are so poorly scanned that the edge of the left-most text on the left-hand pages is cut off with a corresponding huge dark area on the right-hand side of the page. Second, the dimensions of this book are closer to that of a computer manual than the paperback book I was expecting. This may be due to the size of the orignal book. Also, the page count, which I thought indicated more stories, is really made up of many blank pages surrounding the illustrations and of advertisments for other books by the orginal publisher. Had I known about these drawbacks beforehand, I would have looked for another edition to order. Even with book-in-hand, I did not intend to return it until I disconved that this edition contains only about half the Brigadier Gerard stories. As the title states, these are "The Adventures of Gerard". There is another set, called the "Exploits of Gerard", which are not in this book. I have ordered an edition containing both and intend to return this book. I deducted only one star from this review based on the reputation of the author. I cannot speak as to the quality of the stories themselves, having chosen to wait until I receive the complete collection to make a judgement on that quarter.

Sir Arthur Conan Doyle was so much more than just "Sherlock Holmes".
