The Adventures of Hashbrown Winters by Frank L. Cole

There I stood, hiding next to the vending machines, disguised as a potted plant. I brushed the plastic leaves from my face and stared down the hallway toward the front double doors. Snow Cone always said one day this ridiculous costume would come in handy.
Fifteen minutes had passed since the last student left for the buses, but I wasn t about to take any chances. Not with my life hanging in the balance. Leaning forward, I peered around the corner just as the sound of footsteps echoed down the hallway. Was this it? Could this be him? Was I about to be pulverized by Hambone while wearing an emergency disguise I had just pulled from my locker?

Hashbrown Winters and his treehouse club of buddies are well known around Pordunce Elementary, especially after Hashbrown s seminar last year on how to give the best show and tell performances er, presentations. But when Hashbrown accidentally crosses Hambone Oxcart, the death dealer of Pordunce, he ll need more than just the support of his friends to survive Hambone s wrath.

Join Hashbrown, Snow Cone, Whiz, and the rest of the gang in Frank Cole s hilarious debut novel of the trials and tragedies of fifth grade life. The Adventures of Hashbrown Winters will keep kids and parents alike laughing out loud, groaning in sympathy, and turning pages until well past bedtime.

I happened upon Frank Cole's debut as I accompanied my wife on a business trip. I walked into a bookstore and the cover art grabbed me. A perhaps impish, certainly unfortunate freckled boy pleaded with me to read his story and maybe save his life while I was at it. I picked up the book, read the first chapter standing there in the bookstore aisle, and was hooked. Here was a novel entirely from the perspective of a hero who echoed Bill Watterson's Calvin--an imaginative boy who doesn't lie so much as see the world as a place of constant excitement, an opportunity for exploration. Get your son or daughter a copy of Hashbrown's tale. I'm sure they'll commiserate with Hashbrown as he dodges acorns thrown at him by angry squirrels. Fifth-grade life's a battle, to be sure; it's not a chore, though. Cole captures how exciting life can be when we adults step aside and allow kids to be kids. I read the rest of The Adventures of Hashbrown Winters on my flight home. A little laughter makes a three-hour flight fly by. A lot of laughter, and you find yourself glad to be high up in the air with the chance to disappear into an engaging character's world.

As a Children's librarian, I have read this book two years in a row to my upper grade classes. (the students who read it last year have moved on to Hashbrown Winters and the Mashimoto Madness =) They LOVE it! I LOVE IT! The students miss out on some of the mafia related humor, but they still enjoy the book. The characters are funny and kids from any elementary can relate to them. Every school has a Whiz, a Snow Cone, a Hashbrown, and a Hambone (or someone close.) VERY funny, and so well written, I have SO enjoyed this series...and I've probably read it 15+ times. It's still funny! Thanks Frank! Keep 'em coming!

I thoroughly enjoyed reading the published version of this story. I got to hear about it from Frank when we were in a writer's group together. I am so happy that he was able to get it published and I look forward to reading more of Frank's work.

I loved this book so much, it was an easy read but had me laughing the whole way through. Hashbrown has a problem with the school bully and has to go to the 6th grade Mafia for protection. I bought this book because I met the author and he had my friend and I laughing so hard as he described the book, I knew it would be funny. This book is perfect for kids in 3rd-6th grade, or for those of us how have not grown up yet.

Such a fun, laugh out loud story, the whole family enjoyed it. This adventure is amusing with great teaching moments of loyalty and friendship. Great for upper elementary age who can relate to the highs and lows of the life of a fifth grader. Really enjoyed this entertaining book.

This is a fun read. Kids (and Adults) will enjoy reading the fun stories and names in this book. They have so much to read in school, why not make this a book to lighten the load and let them laugh. Hopefully there will be many more books to come and it will be fun to follow the characters in many adventures.

My third grader actually laughed out loud, and there was even a quarrel with his little sister over who should get to read it after dinner. It is a quick and funny read for grown ups to.
