In a hidden valley, a mysterious people gaze at the stormy sky as a glowing object with fiery wings disappears behind a mountain ridge. The astonishing sight reignites an ancient prophecy foretelling the arrival of five chosen ones destined to become bearers of light against a dark storm gathering on humanity's horizon.

In a distant city, a secretive organization led by a shadowy figure initiates a sequence of cataclysmic events designed to wreak havoc across the planet, beginning with a remote mining site in northern Canada.

As the three worlds collide, unlikely heroes arise. Armed with powers entrusted to them by the ancient prophecy and the resilience of their life-long bond, the five teens take a stand against a malevolent foe.

For five teenagers, Kody, Jag, Tegan, Mariah, and Aari, a plane ride into the forests of the Pacific Northwest sounded like a grand adventure. However, that thought is quickly dashed after their plane flies into the middle of a terrible storm and goes crashing to the ground, surrounded by fiery flames. When these five regain consciousness they find themselves in a strange community surrounded by odd but accommodating villagers. Of course their first thought is that of escape but as their caretakers and the elders of the villagers began to tell them of a prophecy they are believed to fulfill, their minds slowly begin to change about the idea of escaping. Soon after deciding to stay, these five begin their training one on one with an elder assigned to each of them. Before too long specific inner powers begin to immerge from each of them and they quickly discover that they have been destined for much more than any of them ever thought possible. A bird engulfed in flames falling from the sky was the first sign the elders of the village believed they would see when the five destined to fulfill the prophecy arrived. Soon after seeing this sign the five teenagers are brought to the village, making them the obvious answer to the upcoming prophecy. Some in the village, however, are not convinced because they believe the five in the prophecy should come from their own people rather than strangers from an outside land. However, as the elders spend more and more time with these five friends they become convinced that these teenagers are the ones they have been waiting for and come to believe that they will be strong enough to face all of the challenges ahead of them. Up in the mountains the head of a mining expedition named Ajajdif is under strict orders to extract a special kind of ore in a matter of weeks. When the project started it was thought that this would not take more than two months but unfortunately more time is needed and Ajajdif is feeling the pressure of the approaching deadline weighing down on him. Ajajdif believed that these mountains did not have anyone living in them, but after arresting four trespassers who obviously dwelled within these mountains, his belief was quickly shattered. These were not just simple mountain dwellers either but skilled and intelligent fighters who are giving Ajajdif more problems than he wants to deal with. If need be Ajajdif will go to war with these people to keep the mining expedition on track and if these villagers continue to cause problems he knows that will be his only choice. From the very first page this story had me transfixed and I ended up absolutely loving this book! Everything from the landscape, the characters, the plot, and the different societies was so well described and were brought together to form an epic adventure. Being able to see the perspective of many characters was also something that I truly enjoyed as I don’t think I would have been able to grasp the plot of this book without seeing it from every angle. It was agonizing knowing that a battle was coming and then having to wait for each character to come to the realization in their own time. Each part of this book had me hanging on the edge begging to know what comes next and how the five heroes would stand up to the challenges that would soon be thrown their way. Quill says: This is an absolutely thrilling story that grips onto the reader and never lets go!

Truly a classic in the making!  As a fantasy fiction writer I have to admit that I am a harsher critic when it comes to novels / books in this genre. Books in this genre have a way to sweep you away into a world that is far distant from our own. In many ways books in this class I feel should be able captivate the imagination and place you in a different realm that is far (very far) from the problems and stress of everyday life. If a book in the genre is able to do that i.e. “Game of Thrones,” “The Hobbit,” “Narnia,” etc. then it has succeeded in a way that will not only stand the test of time, but will also leave a mark on your own life. They will be told time and time again to love ones and the people that interact daily in our lives.  With that said, “AEGIS RISING” accomplishes that and a whole lot more. From start to finish you will be swept into the world of author S.S. Segran. Each of the characters is gifted with their own unique personalities that are developed to perfection. Some are likable, some will leave you thinking, a few will make you grin, while other will have you smiling and rooting for them till the very end. The writing style is also extremely descriptive. This descriptiveness paints a vivid picture that is filled with lavish sceneries that place you in the center of all the action. When reading this book, I felt as if I was walking alongside the dynamic 5 casts of characters as they each find ways to make their mark on the world that is on the brink of disaster. This is one that I can certainly picture on the big screen and perhaps will one day.  Truly the work of a master storyteller I am amazed that author S.S. Segran is only a teenager. If this is the quality of writing now, I cannot imagine how it will develop and be in a few years. Simply Brilliant!  5 Stars well deserved stars and wish there were more stars to pass out.

“Aegis Rising” is a smart, interesting fantasy adventure story with a touch of sci-fi and five engaging protagonists. The story begins in the ancient past—500 BC—when a more advanced civilization flees a natural disaster and finds itself on foreign shores. Generations later, the strangers and the natives have intermingled their cultures and created a peaceful, nature-focused haven where people can unleash the power of their minds to develop almost superhuman abilities. In the present day, a plane crash strands five teenagers in that hidden valley—the Dema-ki—and though they seem to the reader like ordinary young men and women, the Elders of the valley are convinced they are the five saviors from an ancient prophecy who will guide the village through a time of great trouble. As the youths struggle with their newfound life and desire to go home, they will also face danger and betrayal, not only from wild beasts and from inside the village itself, but from a mysterious illness and the operations of Phoenix Corporation in the outside world. There’s something captivating about the possibility of hidden worlds within our own, and “Aegis Rising” succeeds in building a society that’s not only isolated, but almost mystical and entirely fascinating. Since this is the first in a series, you get enough of an impression of the village and its people, as well as the way they use crystals to enhance their individual powers, to whet your appetite for future installments. The five teens who end up there are more modern and add a nice contrast to the story as they deal with not only figuring out their place in the village, but whether they want to accept the prophecy. Tegan, Mariah, Kody, Jag, and Aari all have distinct personalities, but their bond is what drives them forward and what keeps you as a reader invested in the story. The actions scenes are well-written and suspenseful, and the sense of impending disaster that steadily rises throughout the novel keep the tension high. There’s even a subtle environmental message that I enjoyed. I would recommend “Aegis Rising” to readers who are looking for a fantasy/sci-fi adventure story with a new and interesting world, strong characters, and the potential to fill out into a satisfying series.

Reviewed by Lit Amri for Readers' Favorite “From the flames of Cerraco five will arise, Saplings of Aegis, the bearers of light...” In S.S. Segran’s Aegis Rising, sixteen-year-old Tegan Ryder was enjoying a smooth flight in northern Canada with her four best friends; Mariah Ashton, Jag Sanchez, Aari Barnes, and Kody Tyler. A freak storm caught them by surprise, and one of their engines was struck by lightning. They survived the plane crash and found themselves in Dema-Ki, a hidden valley inhabited by mysterious people. The Elders of the people believe that the teenagers are the saviors as foretold in their prophecy. Hesitant at first, the five youths accept their fate, but are they ready to face both the dangers in and outside the valley? This first book in the Aegis League series is well-written and gave me an interesting set of premises to read. S.S. Segran has managed to weave together threads of youth leadership, love, loss, intrigue, excitement, and action in just the right amount without the scenes becoming too artificial. The relationships between characters in the book are deftly depicted and easily convinced me about the depth of their feelings. The story flows along well, with twists placed perfectly in the plot, and I absolutely love the part when the teenagers undergo their training. Due to Segran’s great skill at building the teenagers’ relationships among themselves and with other characters, every scene affects my emotions, ranging from intrigue, hilarity, excitement to anger. I recommend this book to any YA fans that enjoy well-paced, immersive sci-fi/fantasy series worth following.

Brilliant effort! Unputdownable! I first saw the writer, Shirin Segran, in a TV interview, and was impressed by her well thought-out answers to the interviewer. Intrigued, I bought her first book, "Aegis Rising", straight away. I know this science fiction book is targeted at the "Young Adult" category, and I'm probably 5 years too old to fit into this group, but even I liked the book immensely. Shirin is a very talented writer, constructs her novel meticulously and beautifully. She has a complete mastery over the English language and this is reflected in the lovingly crafted sentences. The story is quite fascinating, developed through 3 parallel threads, that are independent of each other, and yet closely interrelated. I loved the character development of the 5 teenage kids, accidentally put into a situation beyond their control and imagination. Their characters are developed very naturally, talking and behaving just as normal real life teenagers. Complimenting the kids are the mysterious Elders from another world and from another age. Evil is represented in form of a powerful mafia like corporation and its enigmatic leader, determined to change the world forever. As with all great novels, the theme is "good" versus "evil", and there are no guarantees about the triumph of the good, making this an absolutely riveting, nail-biting, fight to the finish. 5 stars from me and I look forward to more books from this talented writer. And just as another reviewer here has demanded, I hope a sequel is on the way!

Reviewed by Mamta Madhavan for Readers' Favorite Aegis Rising - An Aegis League Novel by S.S. Segran is an adventurous science fiction that will keep readers engrossed with its action. Five friends - Mariah, Kody, Aari, Tegan and Jag - are forced to crash-land their small plane in Northern Canada. They find themselves in a hidden valley called Dema-Ki and in the midst of mysterious people when they wake up. These inhabitants believe that these five teenagers have the key to salvation as per the prophecy. Though these kids don't believe it initially, the strange turn of events makes them accept the truth about the prophecy.  It is a fast paced, mysterious story that will keep readers glued till the very end. The youthful theme and the new age thinking will fascinate young readers. The theme and concept are great and the author has captured the mystery surrounding the valley and its inhabitants beautifully. The contrasting images of the unexplored, hidden valley and the technological advancement of cities is very interesting to read. The scenes which speak about the battle between good and evil also set the pace, making it an exciting read. The plot has been woven well and the scenes do not sound forced; the portrayal of each character highlights the effectiveness of the scenes in the story. The combination of youth, leadership, mystery, prophecy and a hidden valley has been woven together to bring out a story of surprise. It is indeed a gripping novel!

Reviewed by Kathryn Bennett for Readers' Favorite Aegis Rising: An Aegis League Novel by S.S. Segran involves a plane crash, a hidden valley, ancient prophecy, and a cataclysmic scheme all in one set of pages. Friends Mariah, Aari, Kody, Jag, and Tegan live through a plane crash that puts them in an undiscovered valley with people living in it that are mysterious and uncontacted. After being nursed back to health, they find themselves in the middle of a prophecy which involves them. A story of adventure and faith, what will the outcome be? When I look at an adventure book I want it to have everything, maybe a little bit selfish but I want the adventure, intrigue, and a good story line to go with it. Aegis Rising: An Aegis League Novel by S.S. Segran delivers on every level and makes for a fantastic and interesting book. This is perhaps the best sci-fi adventure I have read all year and I could easily picture Captain Kirk among the landscape, along with our main characters, figuring things out and as an avid Trekkie that is a big compliment. With that parallel said, the people themselves and the story are completely unique and compelling. If you are a sci-fi reader and have been looking for something that is unique and will make you want to keep reading from the first to the last page,  this book is the one you need to read right now. Once I picked it up, I didn’t put it down and enjoyed every word.

I own the e-book and just bought a hardcover as a Christmas gift. This is certainly one of the most original plots I have read in a long time. It is hard to classify a novel so unique and well-written, especially when there are no vampires, zombies, dragons or teenage romance roller-coasters rides to compare with other books in this genre. Instead, there is this beautiful storytelling that engages the reader and then takes you on a breathtaking adventure filled with action and intrigue. The story is BIG! It's hard to put it into a few words. It is something to be experienced. The synopsis describes it the best. For extra clarity of what to expect, check out the author's Book Trailer in YouTube. Search for 'Aegis Rising Trailer'. What you see there is an amazing recreation of what you can expect it the book. ~Krista-S~

Five teens, a plane crash, and an unknown place. I was hooked once I read the overview of this book and the cover drew me in even more. How is a bird related to five teens? And the bird was pretty unusual too, it was a bird coated with a blazing fire. Once I started the book I just couldn't lift my eyes away from it. And when I finished it I just wished I couldn't believe what I read. Then when I searched up the author I couldn't believe that she was just so young. I really enjoyed this book.

In my house we LOVE reading and make a point to read bedtime stories each night. Recently, as my kids have gotten older, we decided to delve into longer chapter books rather than short one-night stories. We just finished Narnia, and the kids were so enthralled in the action of it- that I knew I needed an equally as thrilling of story to follow it. I did a bit of searching and came across Aegis Rising. It’s book one to a series (and in this house we LOVE series!). The story follows five teens, each diverse in their own way but all are equally as likable. They have a pretty remarkable friendship, right from the start. But as the story grows, so does their relationships- which really builds up the story not just in an action standpoint, but in a social dynamics one as well. The five teens, essentially become ‘the chosen ones’, which in a unique way are given powers to save the world (revert back to Narnia, and you’ll see why I chose this book “the chosen ones” are the characters my children love most). So needless to say my children were eagerly excited about the tale. The teenagers embark on an adventure to save the world from a series of events- that, if successful, would bring demise to the entire earth. Although this story is packed with action and the main characters are teens, this book is appropriate for older kids. Children who loved Naria, will probably find equally as entertaining qualities in this book. It keeps the pace very nicely. There are lulls where there need to be (for the reader to settle down and regain themselves) and there are also fast parts, that keep you reading page to page. I actually found myself reading more of this book even after I had put my children to bed. I, myself, couldn’t wait to figure out what happened next. My kiddos went into dreamland, and I was still up delving into this story! The story is so diverse that it can truly relate to both adults and children. It’s one of those timeless tales that expand beyond generational gaps. The characters are fun and engaging enough for older kids, yet deep enough for teens- and mature enough for adults. The story is one of adventure and science-fiction influence, which captures everyone’s imagination and holds it until the very last page. The scenery is vivid and takes you into each moment with such visual ease. I really could see this being a great movie someday. It relates to Harry Potter in the fact that children, teens, and adults alike can find enjoyment in it. And that’s why I’d recommend it to pretty much anyone- but most of all, families that enjoy reading together!

I was first drawn to this novel because of its artwork. It reminded me of the Hunger games, and I'm a total sucker for adventure fantasy  taleWow, I’ve to admit that I’m very impressed with the writing skills of  S.S. Segran. This is beautifully written and, as a history and SciFi geek, I’ve to admit I was ecstatic with the entire plot. I found the introduction to be utterly fantastic and since then I was unable to put the book down. The author excels in creating meaningful dialogue that goes with fully developed characters, and the author’s attention to details is quite lovely. I was able to paint a beautiful picture in my head with her words. The city gates, the ships, the Elders, the plane crash..I can go on and on. Anybody who’s into a good adventure story will surely love “Aegis Rising.” It’s touches upon the plight of five teenagers yet the story is first set in 500 B.C.E and then shifts to a setting in modern times. Overall,  I found this story to be captivating and I hope one day somebody makes this into a film!

This is a dramatic, fast paced book right from the get go. The author switches the view point cleanly between the main protagonists allowing you to get to know, and (mostly) sympathize with them throughout their dramas. I enjoy this style of writing; it means I don't have time to get bored of any of the characters before I'm whisked away to another story line, and keeps them all fresh. I loved the inclusion of the 'people of Dema-Ki' (the Hidden Valley), who we gradually learn more about as the story unfolds; they are the keepers of the ancient prophecy which, they believe, is fulfilled by the survivors of a plane crash. Those survivors are a group of normal teenagers, who are trying to cope with their lives being turned upside down by the prophecy....with giant bears, crazed red-eyed wolves and a mysterious organization that is hell-bent of changing the world as we know it for apocalyptic reasons! I've read a lot of science fiction/fantasy books, I found this one easy to read, full of drama, and wanting more :) definitely recommended.

S.S. Segran is a master when it comes to writing action-adventure/sci-fi! When I purchased this book for my Kindle I originally got it for my daughter. As I was scanning it to make sure there was no unsuitable content I found myself irresistibly drawn in to the story and found that I couldn't put the book down. I read the entire story from beginning to end in one sitting (a rather long one!). I have not been this intrigued and excited over a book in quite some time! The story flows effortlessly and the setting and characters draw you in.  I found myself invested in the main characters and constantly looking out for them. Throughout the read it felt like I was right there with them. S.S.Segran has created an amazing world in Aegis Rising, one that the reader does not wish to leave when the book come to an end. And the good news is we don’t have to wait for long. I learnt from the author’s website that Book Two is to be published in November/December! I will certainly be looking out for it. This is one of the most memorable books I have read. Some of my favorite authors could not have accomplished what this young lady has. I would recommend this book to anyone young and old alike that wish to escape reality for a while and enter into a world of mystery, adventure, sci-fi with tons of action yet with a wonderful underlying, refreshing  message for youths and the young at heart!
