After Hours

Taking Avery Parrish's "After Hours," a blues classic that was a hit for the Erskine Hawkins band in the 1940s, and using it as a blueprint for an entire concept is what fuels this interesting and effective album by saxman Eric Allison. Writing a batch of tunes in the same Saturday night smoky-old-bar mold, Allison put together a crack small band that could swing and still manage to sound like they were playing the last set of the night in some dingy little jazz club. The ambience is sensational, the soloing is cathartic, and the groove is wide and deep, making this one concept album that truly works on every level.
