Really amazing essay on the aftermath of rape, from the point of view of the partner of a victim, as opposed to the victim themselves. It really highlights the "reach" of sexual violence, in that everyone close to that person is forced to witness a kind of death in the person they once knew. That person really isn't ever the same again, and the mourning that happens as a result of losing friends/lovers to this crime is not something I've seen examined in such detail anywhere before...but it struck me upon reading this how incredibly important it is to understanding the impact of rape on society as a whole. The author's honesty in terms of his own reactions to the event and its aftermath, witnessing this process with his lover and feeling helpless to do anything to impact it in any way, is really what makes this essay so powerful. Incredibly important to read, both for rape victims and those who care about them, or anyone else who has suffered from a trauma as personal and long-lasting in impact as sexual crime.
