Overview

Jack Valentini isn't my type.

Sexy, brooding cowboys are fine in the movies, but in real life, I prefer a suit and tie. Proper manners. A close shave.

Jack might be gorgeous, but he's also scruffy, rugged, and rude. He wants nothing to do with a "rich city girl" like me, and he isn't afraid to say so.

But I've got a PR job to do for his family's farm, so he's stuck with me and I'm stuck with him. His glares. His moods. His tight jeans. His muscles.

His huge, hard muscles.

Pretty soon there's a whole different kind of tension between us, the kind that has me misbehaving in barns, trees, and pickup trucks. I've never done anything so out of character--but it feels too good to stop.

And the more I learn about the grieving ex-Army sergeant, the better I understand him. Losing his wife left him broken and bitter and blaming himself. He doesn't think he deserves a second chance at happiness.

But he's wrong.

I don't need to be his first love. If only he'd let me be his last.

This was a bit of a emotional roller coaster for Margot and Jack. This is a 252 nook pages book with steamy loving, both pov, (which I like. I like knowing what each of the characters are thinking.), and some conflict. The conflict is not with other people per se, but with emotional ties to the past and a "ghost". Jack has had a rough time since coming back from 2 tours over seas in the army, and then the death of his wife. He is a strong man with deep, deep guilt which he has a hard time with and becomes consumed with his family farm only. The farm which is struggling.... Enter Margot, who is a rich city girl that is hired by Jack's family to help them turn the farm around for better business. Margot and Jack see fireworks right off the bat, but you will have to see how by reading the story. : )****

There are those authors that you know are consistently going to deliver not only an impeccably written book, but one that is emotional, real and has a hint of humor and Melanie Harlow is most definitely one of those authors. Margot has always lived a privileged life and while she has what most would consider everything she could ever need, there is still something missing. After an incident that makes her the center of attention, and not necessarily in a good way, she's grateful for her PR agency that she started with her friend Jaime, as she can use it as an escape. An escape to the country to help a family owned farm with their PR and marketing needs. She's hoping for a couple of quiet weeks, but it may not be that simple. Jack Valentini is a broken man. There is really no other way to characterize him. While he is broken from the last several years where he has served his country in the armed forces and lost the love of his life, his wife Steph, there is something immediately captivating about him even when he's being surly and stubborn. When his brothers and sister-in-law bring in Margot to help with promoting the family farm, he wants nothing to do with what she's about, both personally and professionally. But even as he tries to protect himself by living in the personal prison he's created for himself, will he be able to turn away from the light that Margot seems to be? This was a book that I was immediately sucked into and I could not put it down. Both Margot and Jack were complex characters, but they were both so intriguing in their own way. I'm not sure there is a woman alive that wouldn't have wanted to try to save Jack. He's one of those men that effortlessly draws you to him and I was no different. I truly believe this may be Melanie Harlow's best work to date and I can't wait to see what she puts forth for us next!

Overall I enjoyed After We Fall. Jack is a really good dirty talker. I liked Margot, but sometimes she confused me. It was like her character did a complete one eighty. It was like that whole Tripp ordeal completely changed who she was in a very short amount of time. It was fine, it didn't take away from the story, or my enjoyment of it. I just found myself thinking-What? That was quick. But, like I said, I enjoyed the story.

It's taken me a week to think about what to write about this novel and I still don't think I can do it justice. This is one of my all time favorite novels! It's heart-wrenching, sweet, funny, realistic....It's everything that makes a novel excellent and thought provoking. It also makes one extremely thankful for our military and all they experience in order to provide us with the freedoms we so often take for granted. Jack has had it rough. He's an ex-war vet and widower who believes karma has taken his wife in exchange for enemy and civilian casualties he killed while serving our country. He's grouchy, mean at times, and alone. The only time Jack feels "almost normal" is when he's working the farm. Jack and his brother's are running the family farm, but it's struggling to make enough money for them all to make a living. So Jack's brothers hire Margot's PR firm to promote their farm. Margot, needing to leave town due to a scone throwing incident, takes the farm on as her client. Margot, a city girl through and through, knows nothing about the country or farming. Margot thinks it will be good for her to get away for awhile and swears off all men. She just didn't know how difficult that would be, until she meets Jack..... Margot believes she can help make the farm more profitable, but decides she needs a crash course in farming. Jack is forced to show Margot the ropes. Jack likes being alone, doesn't like Margot sticking her nose in their business, and especially doesn't like how he starts to feel for Margot. Jack thinks he's being disloyal to his wife's memory, so he treats Margot badly in hopes that she'll stay away. Margot realizes that she's fallen in love with Jack, but he decides he would rather live in his self-imposed prison. Margot returns home in hopes that Jack will change his mind and pick her. This novel will make you laugh, cry, and make you want to slug Jack while wrapping him in a BIG bear hug! He's so bent on punishing himself, that he doesn't realize until it's almost too late that he deserves happiness. Jack works hard to let his past go and move on so that he may have a second chance with Margot. Loved it!!!!! I highly recommend this novel to anyone who believes love can conquer all. I received a gifted copy and all opinions expressed are my own.

After We Fall By: Melanie Harlow 5 Star Review by Kristie K. Melanie Harlow has gifted us with a stunning, and breathtaking story of life after love…and the strength it takes to love again… Margot Thurber Lewiston has grown up in the world of high society, proper etiquette, and affluence. Though this is the world she knows, Margot is not a snob…not an elitist that believes she is better than anyone else. She is kind and compassionate, generous and loving. She puts her heart and soul into her work, and doing things for others is just who she is. When she takes a PR job for a small farm, Margot takes a vacation to the country, and meets some incredible people in the process. The Valentini Brothers farm is amazing, and the family welcomes her with open arms…well, all but one… Jack Valentini is a broken man, his only solace is working on the farm. When his brothers bring in a woman from some PR firm in the city, he is livid…though anger is nothing new from him. From the day he lost his wife, Jack has been consumed with anger, guilt, and constant pain. Unwilling to let her go, Jack lives in the past and fights any change to the way things are. He doesn’t need anyone to tell him what to do with his farm, and he certainly doesn’t want some entitled city girl traipsing around making changes. Making no bones about his feelings, Jack lets Margot know exactly what he thinks of her. This book took me on a emotional ride, from happy and hopeful, to broken and devastated…the feels it evokes are intense, leaving you gutted one minute and flying the next. The pain and guilt Jack experiences is palpable. His anger is unwarranted, but understandable…his heartbreak tangible and complete. A simple man full of complex emotions, and a deeply ingrained belief that he deserves to suffer. When Margot shows up, his comfort zone is threatened, and he feels a sense of betrayal when he begins to feel something for her. Such a beautiful torment, written with so much emotion that I could feel every nuance. Margot is a beautiful woman, inside and out. Even with her high society upbringing, she isn’t afraid to get her hands dirty, and her desire to help out the family is real. Her attraction to Jack is undeniable and intense, and she finds herself changing from the experience too. HIs brokenness calls to her, and she wants nothing more than to soothe his pain. She doesn’t do it to change him, only to ease him. Her respect for his late wife touched me deeply, and her kind understanding for what they had truly breathtaking. The storyline was flawless, and the writing impeccable. I fell in love with the story, the characters, and the very essence of this story. A definite must read for romance lovers, and fans of Ms. Harlow. Kristie K.

“He was kissing me like I’d never been kissed before. Like he was going to war. Like he didn’t care about breathing. Like something in him needed something in me so desperately, he had to find it or die trying.” “Something that had long been closed off inside me was opening up, and I felt a rush as it filled with her presence, her trust, her understanding. The idea that she could feel something for me. The hope that all would be forgiven. The promise of a new life. A new beginning. A new love.” “I was vulnerable to her in a way I’d never been to anyone. Everything was bare to her now, all my secrets, all my suffering, all my scars. And she still wanted me.” If you’re looking for a swoon worthy and angst filled second chance romance, than look no further, After We Fall is just the right book for you. For me, this book is one of those rare beauties that if I could rate it more than 5 stars, I totally would….And that says something. For me, After We Fall is one of those epic love stories that sinks its hooks in to you instantly and will stay with you way after the story ends. After We Fall is told from dual points of view and follows the story of Jack and Margot. Margot never takes any risks and always does what’s expected of her….That is until one day, she finally has enough. When she sees her ex engaged to someone else, less that 24hrs after proposing to her, that is the last straw. Margot is no longer the model daughter and no longer is letting herself be stepped on. Her actions seemed like a good idea at the time, but only led to gossip. That left Margot with no choice but to leave town until things quieted down. When Margot left town, the last thing she planned on was Jack. You see, Jack and his family are new clients of hers. Margot is supposed to be wowing them with marketing ideas, not swooning over Jack. But, that is just easier said than done….Jack has been a mess since he lost the love of his life. He is just a shell of a man and lives his life the best way that he can. The last thing he ever planned on was Margot. Margot represents everything he wishes he had, but lost. In turn that made Jack even moodier (if possible) and his attitude; an all time worse. Even with all of that, it was impossible to not connect with this broody, grumpy man. His pain and heartbreak is very real and very raw. I know I was rooting for him the entire time…. After We Fall totally exceeded my expectations, taking me on a wonderful, angst filled journey. This story had a lot of ups and down and a lot of heartbreaking moments. I loved every second with Margot and Jack. Their push and pull had me begging for more and hoping for second chances. Margot and Jack’s story really pulled at my heart. It made me laugh and smile. I loved just how real these two characters were and how they were in no way perfect. I adored Jack. He is the book boyfriend that you just want to fight for. When he’s not being a broody jerk, he really is an amazing man with one hell of an alpha side…I don’t even think he knew existed. And Margot…I loved how she always tried to see the bright side of everything and wasn’t afraid to be herself…no matter how awkward the situation. After The Fall is truly an amazing second chance romance. The characters and story-line are unforgettable and so easy to love. This book will definitely be making my list of top reads of 2016. I hope you’ll take a chance on this sweet second chance romance.

Another exceptionally impressive book from Melanie Harlow! After We Fall is a deeply emotional read. It's story line is eloquently written, and captures your heart with its power to evoke such raw feelings from the reader. The story is a charming twist on opposites attract, how two people from two completely different worlds can find each other, and bring the other back to life. Jack and Margot are amazing characters, and they compliment each other wonderfully. But they couldn't be more different. While Margot is optimistic and hopeful, Jack is somber, stubborn and a bit of a jerk. Okay, to be completely honest, he's a big jerk. But the more you learn about Jack, the more you sympathize with him, and understand the real reasons why he is the way he is. And the more they discover about one another, the more Margot believes she can have a permanent spot in Jack's life. But can Jack learn to let go of his past and convince himself that he deserves a chance at happiness? I really enjoyed this book, and the romance exploded from the pages. As much as I loved both characters, I was just a little taken aback by how quickly Jack's emotions changed. One minute he's broody, sullen, and quick to temper. The next, he's humorous and a little carefree. I feel like he changed too quickly at first, considering his dark and tragic past. And the inner dialogue and interactions with Margot left me a little confused as to what Jack really wanted from their relationship. And it's no wonder Margot was somewhat blindsided by Jack's sudden withdrawal, his back and forth emotions were complicated. But overall, the book was very entertaining and special. If you're a fan of Melanie's previous books, then you'll definitely enjoy After We Fall. Strongly recommended!

4.5 stars for a stand-alone, opposites attract romance set on a farm. I freely admit I am not overly fond of cowboys so when the author released the blurb for this book I wasn't dying to read it, but just a few chapters into the book I was completely hooked! Ladies I promise it's yet another winner from the hugely talented Melanie Harlow who fills her pages with laughs, love and feels from start to finish. Margot Lewiston is in need of an escape from the city she calls home after a nightmare debacle with her ex-boyfriend at a charity event. She decides to take on the PR for an organic farm a few hours out of town and increase not only their brand but the idea of sustainable agriculture as a whole. Margot never once thought going to Valentini Brothers Farms would change her life, but the minute she meets Jack Valentini things start to shift. Jack Valentini is an ex-military man who along with his brothers own Valentini Brothers Farm. Jack while outwardly gorgeous is slowing falling to pieces on the inside due to the death of his young wife. Jack's grief and hostility is alienating him from just about everyone in his life so the last thing he needs is some city-girl to tell him how to run his business. The only problem is the intense attraction he feels towards this woman turns him on and ticks him off in equal measure. There is no way he will ever fall in love again...right? Wow this book had equal parts emotion and chemistry mixed to make the best characters MH has wrote to date. I loved how they developed both separately and together to find their HEA. Can't wait for more from this author in the future :)

Wow, another amazing story. I can't get over how much and how fast I loved this story. I couldn't put it down once I started and I think I'm going to start over again already. Margot and Jack had such amazing chemistry and I love the way they interacted with each other. The opposite personalities made them so much fun to see which way they would go. There were parts of the story that had me laughing and smiling to myself and there were parts where i cried. It was such a beautiful story. As always I cannot wait for the next one!!

Wow! I absolutely loved this book!! Such a sweet, love story that I couldn't get enough of!! Margot and Jack had such intense chemistry from the start! Talk about some love scenes! Swoon!! It had some hilarious moments too! I loved when Margot fell out of the tree trying to get a better peek! I loved seeing how Margot slowly breaks down Jack's walls little by little and basically brings him back to life. This book has some major angst so get ready to feel all the emotions! Embarrassed to say that this is the first book that I've read by Melanie Harlow but it definitely won't be my last!! I received a free copy and voluntarily left my honest review!

I loved this book so much! Jack is the definition of an overcoming emotional damage hero, in all the best ways. And Margot was great too, for a city girl! As usual, Melanie Harlow brought great writing, good witty banter and characters that you care about, and in this book you have rip your heart out and put it back together emotions. I don't even know what else to say other than, do yourself a favor and read this book. It's definitely one of my top reads of the year, and one of Melanie's best works.

I am Karen. Karen I am. Do I like grumpy farmer Jack? Would I like him here or there? Would I like him anywhere? I'd like to bang him in a house, I'd like to bang him with my spouse. Would I eat him in a box? I would eat him, he's a fox. I would bang him against a tree, I would bang him joyfully. Try him try him you will see, You will like my farmer Jack. He's just lush and loverly! Melanie Harlow's wit shines bright in After We Fall. I laughed at Sconegate - go Gogo! I laughed, and am still laughing at the plagiarism of Doctor Seuss (best kids' book ever ever). I love angry sex in a book and Melanie writes it so well. I'm a big fan of the brooding hate you looks whilst simultaneously wanting to rip off clothing. Flove it. Flove Jack Valentini. On my way to research sexy farmers...for a friend.

5 Enjoy the Fall Stars! This is a sweet 'opposites attract' romance that will capture your heart and never let go. It is hilarious, and sexy but also poignant, emotional, and passionate. Margot Thurber Lewiston grew up in the city with a privileged lifestyle. She is smart, successful, and kind. Jack Valentini is a sullen ex. marine who didn't like being around people but loved working on his family farm. When his brothers hired Margot's PR firm to help them promote their business, Jack wasn't happy about a 'city girl' coming in and telling him what to do. Margot saw the sweet, soft survivor under Jack's moody, defensive, broken, and sexy exterior. After a rough start, Jack soon realized that this beautiful, funny, loving woman was more than he first judged her to be. They had fun together, teased each other and their chemistry was off the charts. Their differences complimented each other and made them so perfect together. But Jack was still suffering great loss and couldn't get past his guilt to open up completely to Margot. Margot had suffered loss as well and was finding her way to make her life matter again. Will they be able to matter together? There were so many hilarious moments that made me laugh out loud. The poignant moments were so heartfelt and honest and added a depth that kept me turning the pages. Melanie Harlow expertly weaves a story that makes you feel so many emotions and makes you beg for more. I loved every minute of this book, and you will too!

**4.5 Stars** Where do I even begin with this book? I loved it. Jack and Margot are a perfect couple and I loved every bit of their story. The progression of their story was every bit my favorite, from start to finish, I need more of them. That's for sure. Jack, where do I start with him? I loved him. He was prickly and standoffish and not ready for change but once you learn his story you can't blame him. I would have been too. Once he decides to go for something, he goes all in. He loves fiercely and gives his all, but it'll take a force to make him want it all again. The force he wasn't prepared for was Margot Lewiston. Margot has always been told how to live and what is expected for her. After a disaster of a year the chance to work on an out of town project is one she latches onto, what she wasn't prepared for was the handsome middle brother Jack in the Valentini Brothers Farm. He brings out this side of her she didn't know she had, but if makes her feel something she never knew she had. I loved every bit of Jack and Margot's story. You catch a glimpse of Jamie and Quinn from Man Candy and has you calling in love all over again. I can't wait for more from Melanie!

Melanie Harlow has written a story of Love, heartbreak, and second chances. Margot is a woman who comes from a very wealthy family, a woman who has always lived up to her family's expectations and done the things expected of her. That is until the day she starts throwing scones at her ex at a public function. Margo and her friend Jaime run a business together helping other businesses become more successful and gain more attention. She needs a change after the scone fiasco and decides to take on a client a couple hours from home. She travels to The Valentini Brothers Farms, a company owned by three brothers, one of which has no interest in doing any marketing and does not want Margot helping them. Jack is a widower with a lot of baggage. He is a very unhappy man and does not like outsiders, especially a city girl, coming in and changing the way things are done. Margot slowly gets under Jack's skin and convinces him to show her how things are done on the farm to help her understand what their company needs. While spending time together, Margot begins to break down his walls, just by being herself and it scares the heck out of Jack. He catches himself smiling and even laughing, something he had not done in a long time. Will Jack take a chance on Margot and move on from his past, or is he destined to live the rest of his life alone. You will have to read After We Fall to find out. I really enjoyed this story and recommend it to anyone who enjoys a good romance.

Actual Rating 4.5 stars After We Fall is a beautiful and emotional second chance love story. It will make you cry and break your heart, but just as quickly, it will make you laugh out loud and feel giddy with hope. I loved Jack and Margot - both individually and together. I also loved that the story was told from both of their points of views and that we got glimpses into the feelings and reasons they were acting the way they were. On paper, Margot and Jack couldn't be more different, but once the walls and masks fell away, they really complemented each other so well. I did want to scream at Jack a few times for the way he behaved, but in the end it was hard not to fall in love with him after everything he had experienced. Plus, there were plenty of swoony and steamy moments that left me blushing! Let's just say, that I have a new appreciation for farmers! ;) The other characters in the book were just as great! I loved Jack's brothers, Pete and Brad, and his sister in law, Georgia, and how cute was his nephew, Cooper!? My heart melted every time they were together. I liked that his family pushed when they needed to, but also just supported Jack the way that they thought was most helpful (even if Jack didn't/couldn't see it that way). I especially enjoyed Margot's best friend, Jamie. She is the girlfriend we all need, who will tell you like it is, but still have your back 100%. One of my favorite parts of the book though, were all the scone puns! Seriously, they were so funny and helped lighten the mood when things got a little heavy. I definitely enjoyed After We Fall a lot and the only reason it's not 5 stars for me is that I'm not really a fan of the dead spouse/lover storyline and I thought the ending chapters felt a little rushed. The epilogue was perfection though and Melanie's writing is so witty and relatable that this was still an amazing read! If you're really not a fan of the dead spouse trope though, you may not enjoy the book as much since it plays a big part in Jack's character arc. *Many thanks to the author for providing this ARC free of charge*
