Who would have thought that the Zombie apocalypse would begin in Riverdale? Jughead seeks the help of Sabrina the Teenaged Witch when his beloved pet Hot Dog is run over. However, he should have heeded the warning of Sabrina's aunt: "Sometimes, dead is better." In an interview at the end of the comic, artist Francesco Francavilla states that the factor that sets this story apart from other zombie tales is that it involves characters we know and care about, rather than anonymous strangers. In my opinion this holds true, at least for this first volume in the series. You won't find many characters more sympathetic than Jughead and Hot Dog. The comic is also a homage to many icons of horror, including Stephen King (Pet Sematary), H. P. Lovecraft (the Necronomicon), Alfred Hitchcock (Betty's choices for her Halloween costume) and the Universal Horror Movie monsters. My favorite part is a re-enactment of the cemetery scene from the original "Night of the Living Dead" by Mr. Weatherbee and Miss Grundy. There's plenty of fun for fans of horror, especially the Zombie genre. The faint of heart should be warned, however. This is not the Groovie Ghoulies. It is a serious horror story with bloody, disturbing scenes, including Jughead being attacked by his resurrected dog. Another scene shows Sabrina's aunts, who presented themselves as kindly, even compassionate elderly ladies to Jughead, transforming into horrid, wrathful monsters when they punish Sabrina for her "blasphemy" of necromancy. This comic should be rated at least PG-13.
