Against the Grain by Charlie Cochet

Sequel to Rise & Fall

THIRDS: Book Five

As the fiercest Defense Agent at the THIRDS, Destructive Delta’s Ash Keeler is foul-mouthed and foul-tempered. But his hard-lined approach always yields results, evident by his recent infiltration of the Coalition. Thanks to Ash’s skills and the help of his team, they finally put an end to the murdering extremist group for good, though not before Ash takes a bullet to save teammate Cael Maddock. As a result, Ash’s secrets start to surface, and he can no longer ignore what’s in his heart.

Cael Maddock is no stranger to heartache. As a Recon Agent for Destructive Delta, he has successfully maneuvered through the urban jungle that is New York City, picking up his own scars along the way. Yet nothing he’s ever faced has been more of a challenge than the heart of Ash Keeler, his supposedly straight teammate. Being in love isn’t the only danger he and Ash face as wounds reopen and new secrets emerge, forcing them to question old loyalties.

First off I just want to say how much I absolutely LOVE the whole THIRDS series! Second, Ash Keeler drives me nuts and Cael Maddox is the epitome of "sweetheart". Third, I did miss Dex and Sloane not being at the heart of this installment. Finally, as much as I missed Dex and Sloane being front and center, I loved seeing inside the gruff exterior of Ash and it's always a pleasure to see more of Cael. When I first started Against I thought "what am I going to do without Dex's crazy love of everything 80s and Sloane's closeted nerdiness?" Well, by the time I was a chapter in I realized that not only were Dex and Sloane still there but that there was more to Ash than we were led to believe. I won't give any more details about the story but I will say that getting to see into the hearts and mind of other members of Destructive Delta was a pleasant surprise and lovely treat. Learning more of Ash's history doesn't soften his gruffness or increase his tolerance for Dex's antics but it does make me love him nearly as much as I love Dex, Sloane, and Cael. As for Cael, there really isn't much I can say because he's just as adorable now as he was the first time we met him Hell and High Water. All in all, Against the Grain is a brilliant addition to the THIRDS universe. Even though a different couple is the focus of the story it furthers the ongoing journey of Delta and should be read in order. *Rushing off to read #6*

Against The Grain is the first book where Dex and Sloane are not the main couple. Instead, we concentrate on Ash and Cael, and to be fair, their story has been a long time coming. We start where the previous book finished, with Tony wielding Old Betsy, but to the guys' surprise, it doesn't go down how they expected. Instead, Ash learns more about Cael than he realised he didn't know, and it makes him want to 'try'. This is still difficult for Ash, and it's not without it's hiccups, but Cael is prepared to help him where he can. Now, this wouldn't be a THIRDS book if something else wasn't going down, and this time it's all mixed in with Sloane's loss of control, plus it turns out Ash's loss of control, and maybe one other. You are left not knowing who to trust, apart from the family that is Destructive Delta! Everything does become clear, plus it means a change for our crew, but they are prepared to fight for what they believe in. I will admit that I actually missed Dex's banter more than I thought I would. Although he is (obviously) still around, he isn't the main character and therefore the quips are there as much. Still, I enjoyed the mix of action, intrigue, romance, and sex. Ash and Cael's story is one that I wanted, waited for, and thoroughly enjoyed. I loved all the intrigue, the questions, and how this book complements the series as a whole. Most definitely recommended by me. * Verified Purchase ~ April 2017 * Merissa Archaeolibrarian - I Dig Good Books!

Well, having waited so long after the last one to read this one I must say, I was impressed that I remembered so much with out having to be reminded with those annoying flash backs. Kudos to the author for that. This one unlike the last novels had a different feel to it, right from the get go. We were more in relationship building, bonding, mending, growing, and all those other words we use. And not just the ‘couples’ but friends, family, team mates. And although this is tagged to be Cael and Ash, we still get Dex and Sloane. And of course the others. Which for me really worked out, because I have to say, I’m not a huge fan of either one and this story really didn’t help with that. We did find out more of the back stories on what shaped both of these men. Past loves and so on. And we did have a little of the humor that made the first one and two in the series so great. But this was much more serious. And to me the humor that was given was almost canned, fell flat. As far as the actual Delta team working, well for a long while I was’t sure they would in this book. But we finally get around to a case and it’s a good one, but it’s almost like an after thought and rushed to be started and ended at the end of the book. However, looks like Calvin and Hobbs is up next and those two…. yes, please. I was given a copy for an honest review by Crystals Many reviews

This is the 5th book in the THIRDS acclaimed series. I recommend reading the books in order for full understanding of the story and enjoyment for the reader. This book can be read as a standalone, but I caution the inside jokes and mystery taking place makes more sense reading as the author intended. The long awaited story for Ash and Cael comes with several surprises. The THIRDS team has been through a lot lately, and they are struggling at this point. Cael wants to hope that his friendship with Ash can sustain the hits they keep taking, but he is not so sure. Ash is still in denial until a tragedy wakes him up to the real possibility he could lose Cael before he ever really has him. All our favorite agents are present and accounted for, making this a fun and exciting read. Each installment in this series has me thinking the author cannot shock me anymore. Well, I have been told. She makes it happen in the best way possible and I enjoyed every single page. I cannot wait for the next book in the THIRDS series!

This series is one of my favorites. I love how each character has their own totally unique personality. Sometimes in a series, the storyline and roles in the books seem to repeat. That is definitely not the case here. Actually, I have to admit that I wasn't always crazy about Ash. He's the type that almost everyone thinks is an [...]. We saw hints of the real him in the other books, but it was wonderful to see things from Cael's point of view. And seeing how Ash truly feels about Cael made me all swoony. From the previous books, we know that there are some seriously shady dealings going on within the scientific community. Of course it involves people inside Thirds. There are lots of mysterious meetings, unknown drugs and cases of figuring out who's good and who's bad. Our favorite Thirds agents are still one big family. They work hard and play hard together. The more I learn about their backgrounds, the more I love them. All the office romances are like the icing on the cake. Against the Grain was one of my most highly anticipated reads this year, and it did not disappoint. I loved every word, and I cannot wait for more from one of the best casts ever.
