Against the Mark by Kat Martin

The perfect murder is a work of art

In one catastrophic instant, Haley Warren's estranged father was taken from her. She never got the chance to reconnect with him, so now she's doing it the only way she's got left: by proving the explosion that killed him was no accident.

When Tyler Brodie, the provocative and handsome P.I. hired by Haley, discovers that her father was investigating a suspected art theft, he knows his death is no coincidence. After all, tens of millions of dollars worth of stolen art could motivate a thief to go to any lengths—including getting rid of anyone poking around where they don't belong.

As Haley and Ty get closer to the truth, the truth gets ugly: Did Haley's dad know too much…or was he in on the take? And although Ty's a consummate professional, he's having trouble focusing on the facts of the case, and not the figure of his gorgeous client. The two are determined to get to the bottom of the case, even if it means they die trying.

I had a tiny bit of trouble getting into the story early on, but that corrected itself pretty quickly. Kat Martin delivers what she promises and AGAINST THE MARK is another example of her consistent quality. Haley Warren leaves chilly Chicago for Hollywood to discover her father's killer. Along the way, she discovers things aren't always what they seem, even her own beliefs. Ty Brodie works with her to solve the mystery and keep her safe...except not for him. Against the Mark is an enjoyable romantic suspense, perfect for a summer read. There are enough plot twists to keep you guessing until the very end. Some of the techniques these two use to get the information they want are quite imaginative. Great story, a must read.

Haley Warren leaves chilly Chicago for Hollywood to discover her father’s killer. Along the way, she discovers things aren’t always what they seem, even her own beliefs. Ty Brodie works with her to solve the mystery and keep her safe…except not for him. Against the Mark is an enjoyable romantic suspense, perfect for a summer read. There are enough plot twists to keep you guessing until the very end. Some of the techniques these two use to get the information they want are quite imaginative. At times I found the pacing a little slow, especially in the beginning, but toward the end I was tapping my Kindle as fast as I could! I was given a complimentary copy of the book in return for an honest review.

Haley Warren turned her back on her father when he divorced her mother and married the woman he was having affair with. When he is killed in an explosion, a plea for help and her pangs of guilt lead her across the country in search of what really happened. Haley hires Tyler Brodie, a handsome and charming Private Investigator who uncovers a possible series of valuable art thefts that her father was investigating, and it may cost her her own life when she gets too close to the answers. To make matters worse, Haley must deal with the evil woman who stole her father, probably, she assumes to spend the millions he spirited away from his first marriage. Isn’t that enough to deal with? Thanks to her parents’ fine example of an unhappy marriage, Haley doesn’t even believe in love and has never experienced an honest and open, loving relationship. Enter Ty, and with each touch or look, there is a feeling like an electrical charge that passes between them, except that Ty is quite the ladies’ man, and his phone rings constantly with calls from “old” girlfriends, further strengthening Haley’s resolve that relationships are not possible. Back to the art thefts, millions of dollars are at stake and Ty and Haley are not about to give up, even with bullets flying all around them! Will they get to the bottom of her father’s death? Was it really related to the thefts? Was it an accident or was it murder? Can Ty convince Haley that lasting, monogamous love is possible? Especially when his old flames keep reappearing? Against the Mark by Kat Martin is fast, and I mean FAST-paced. It holds all of the emotional tension of a good mystery/thriller as each layer of the mystery is uncovered and the cast of thugs and financial schemers start coming out of the woodwork! The supporting characters were wonderful, and in a fabulous twist, one character, a huge, muscular and shaved-headed bodyguard, gave me one of those “didn’t see that one coming” moments! Haley was too cynical and harsh too often. Ty was most definitely a charmer, but his harem of female followers was a bit much for a man reputed to be so wonderful, kind, loyal, honest, etc. I seriously wanted to shake some sense of compassion into Haley and then tell each and every female who called for Ty and his “special talents” that he was NOT going to call them back. Period. So, what does this tell me about Against the Mark? I must have gotten more involved than I thought! An ARC edition was provided by NetGalley & Mira in exchange for my honest review.

J: This one was a little disappointing. I started skipping over quite a bit. Too much drama for me. I cared a lot about the characters and their relationships, but the crime just did not have enough excitement to hold my attention.

I am a big fan of Kat Martin's books. There are several in a series that all start with "Against the..." I have really like all the books in the series so far and am anxious to read the next one. This one was a little tough for me because I lost my Dad to cancer so feeling Haley's loss was difficult for me. I loved Haley and Ty together. I wanted their love story to have a happy ending. Haley had a difficult time committing to marriage she hadn't seen too many happy marriages but Ty was definitely persistent. I was with him all the way. The story had several twists and turns so it was a fun read. Definitely recommend this book to all suspense romance fans.

AGAINST THE MARK by Kat Martin is an exciting Romantic Suspense. #9 "The Raines of Wind Canyon",but I feel can be read as a stand alone. A great read that is fast paced and action packed. Ms. Martin continues to write a saga with this series that is filled with secrets, danger, adventure and romance. It has just the right amount of romance and intrigue to keep the reader entertained. Any reader who enjoys romance and suspense is sure to love one of Kat Martin's stories. The heroine is strong and the hero a alpha male, who will do anything necessary to keep his woman safe. Oh, yea this has stolen Art and murder involved! A great read from start to finish with a few twists and turns included. Received for an honest review from the author and/or publisher. I enjoyed all of this series.

This series is exciting, and I love the plots, and at the risk of being a fuddy-duddy, sometimes Ms. Martin is a bit too explicit for me. What I enjoy is the growth of the characters, and their understanding of each other's backgrounds, and of course that they fall in love. We met Tyler in her previous book and he was intriguing. The story of a young woman making ammends and investigating her father's "accident" was intriguing too. What didn't work for me, was the shift from Mr. Casual Sex to wanting to marry this woman. It was hurried, and unbelievable. The actual investigation, the bad guys, and the other relationships Ty had in his life were good, and fun to read. It's definitely worth the read, but it isn't my favorite of the series....

I have not read this book yet, but I know it will be good story. I expect nothing less from Kat Martin. I sure do hope see comes up with more characters so that she'll write new stories for this series.

Reasonably well written. Story line is intriguing. Character development run-of-the mill. Over all a good book for introduction to the romantic suspense genre.
