Overview

Aida [Orignal Broadway Cast]

Elton John's sophomore stage show, Aida, is the follow-up to the knighted composer's Lion King, the innovative and critically lauded musical that's currently the crown jewel of the Disney juggernaut continuing to redefine Broadway. An adaptation of the myth that inspired Verdi's timeless opera, Aida is a torrid tale of destiny, duty, and forbidden love set among Egypt's ancient pyramids. Exotic locations and sensual orchestrations provide a grand backdrop for Sir Elton's luscious, pomegranate-ripe melodies, and Tim Rice's passionate lyrics. The brilliant original cast features Heather Headley, who sizzles in her Tony-nominated performance as the captive Nubian princess in love with the conqueror, Radames, played by Adam Pascal, a matinee idol known for his recent role as Roger in the original cast of Rent. The stars generate enough heat to pump life into a mummy on "Not Me," "Elaborate Lives," "My Strongest Suit," and "Like Father, Like Son." With Aida, the former Captain Fantastic completes his amazing transformation from pop star to King of the Great White Way.

This is an amazing effort from Sirs Elton John and Tim Rice.  I love every single song on this album.  I have completely fallen for Heather Headley's voice.

I love this sound track. I very much use reviews to decide if I want to buy something and so far there is only 1 1star review, and I dont know what their problem is. But the reviews speak for themselves.

Hurry! Buy this CD and then book the next flight to New York to see the play on Broadway! If you are an Elton John fan, you'll be stunned by this new avenue of artistic expression for our favorite knight. If you are a Tim Rice fan, the lyrics will compel you. If you are a fan of the theatre, you'll enjoy this CD which stays true to the performance of the play. For everyone else, you won't be disappointed. And don't miss the play! It will always be great, but seeing it with the actors who originated the roles is vastly important!

This was terrific! I saw the musical on Broadway and immediately fell in love with it. The sets were amazing, the music, astounding. Whenever I listen to this CD I close my eyes and I'm there again, in those awesome orchestra seats, watching it, all over again. Every song is tuned to perfection. Love love love! Tis a pity it's going off broadway so soon...

I had a chance to see Aida in New York on a school trip. It was amazing! At the end everyone in the audience gave the cast a standing ovation.

What a great album. My school performed it in 2007, I absolutely loved it. After the interest meeting, I immediately bought some songs from the album. Then, I bought the CD and listened to album all the time. If you love musicals, this one is for you!!!!

I had the oppurtunity to see Aida 3 times. Twice in rehersals and on opening night, I thought it was truly amazing. I didn't understand how the critics we're not blown away with all the 3 leads, and the sets, and lights, and most importantly their voices, this recording takes me back to that special feeling I had when I saw the show.

I saw Aida 5 days before it opened and not only was I blown away, so was the rest of the audience! An Elton fan since I was knee high, his influence was very evident. I am so happy the CD captures the strong & captivating performances by the 3 leads. Even without seeing the show-this is a great collection of music...but you gotta see the show, too!!

This musical has already been dubbed to my hall of fame, and Heather Headly and Sherrie Rene Scott rein at the top of that personal h.o.f. of mine. I have never found myself so emotionally involved in a performance of any sort since the likes of Les Miserables. May I recommend booking a seat in the Palace theater on Broadway immediately for the musical genius of Elton John and the touching lyrics of Tim Rice. You won't regret it!

Listening to Heather Headley and Adam Pascal sing touches the very bottom of one's heart and soul. The passion in their voices can only be matched by the passion they exhibit on stage together. If the soundtrack excites you, then seeing these two live on stage is a must! Listeners and viewers become so involved with these two that they want to become them. The only aspect missing from this recording is the orchestration for the dance sequences within the show.

Aida, the musical, is based on Verdi¿s opera Aida. I have no idea how the story in the musical, which came out in the last decade, differs from the opera (which dates back to 1871). I know that the basic story line is the same; but I¿ve never seen or listened to the opera, so, while I know that John and Rice must have made some changes to the story, I don¿t know how big they are or where they occur. The story of the musical, to be very brief, is about a young woman, Aida (played, on Broadway, by Heather Headley), a Nubian princess who has been captured and become an Egyptian slave, who falls in love with Radames (played by Adam Pascal), who, ironically, is actually the army officer who enslaved her. He loves Aida back, but he¿s engaged to marry Amneris (Sherie René Scott), the only child of Egypt¿s dying Pharaoh. After Aida tries to run away from Egypt back to Nubia (where she can organize how to free the other Nubian slaves in Egypt) and fails, she and Radames, who was assisting her, are sentenced to death by the Pharaoh. Amneris exercises her authority, as the future Pharaoh, to at least allow the two of them die together in a tomb. The musical ends with two people, who look like Aida and Radames, and are played by the same actors, meeting each other in a modern museum, under the watchful eye of Amneris¿ mummy. It is hinted that these are Aida¿s and Radames¿ spirits, united at last. The story is tragic and, at the ending (in the museum part), a little odd, in my opinion; but I adore this musical. It¿s funny how much I like it, because the lyrics are at times a little slapstick (Another Pyramid), grammatically off (Not Me), goofy (My Strongest Suit), and trite (A Step Too Far). But they are also powerful (The Gods Love Nubia). I can¿t help loving the music, since I¿m a great Elton John fan. It¿s upbeat in places and soaring in others. I enjoy dancing to the songs and humming their tunes. I think my overall favorite track on the CD is The Gods Love Nubia. The lyrics are beautiful and the music is also, with its crescendos/decrescendos, and Headley¿s mellow, expressive, and just plain gorgeous voice singing lead. The song begins with her singing a cappella, although she is soon joined by background vocals, and then by instrumentals. The song is poignant and gorgeous at the same time, and the lyrics, which are metaphorical and descriptive, really appeal to me. If you like a mix of soft rock music with a delightfully passionate twist, beautiful vocals, a modernized story line set in Ancient Egypt, and don¿t mind lyrics that are, at times, only slightly second-rate, then I recommend that you find a recording of this CD. Headley¿s voice alone makes it a winner.

I saw the show in New York with my sister front row center, thanks to 1/2 price student rush, and fell in love with it. I was captivated by the amount of emotion and heart put into the singing and performance by the actors and actresses and could not tare my eyes away from the stage! Every element, from lighting to costume design was perfect! As soon as the show was done I went straight to the music store next door to buy the CD.

This album truely does justice to the show, but as good as it is, get out and see it on stage. I've seen it 4 times, and every time it just gets better and better. All three leads are fantastic, but the show is all about Heather.

This is definitely a nice show. Some songs truly excelled and complimented the voices of the actors, like "My Strongest Suit", which showed off Sherie Rene Scott's powerful voice, "How I Know You", which made Damian Perkins's voice sound so sweet, and "Elaborate Lives", which was an unusually...intelligent love ballad and showed that Adam Pascal deserved all of the hype. However, this is not the best show. The story jumps about, and it is hard to keep track of. Some songs just fell short. "Radames' Letter" "by the way, that should be "Radames's", since there should be an "s" after the apostrophe unless the noun is plural and ends in "s"", "The Past is Another Land", "The Gods Love Nubia", and many others are cheesy and unimpressive, and all together it was fairly boring. I would not deem this as a good show with some bad qualities, but a bad show with some good qualities. Those good qualities were often outstanding "Sherie's voice was so perfect for the role: sweet and innocent, but with a certain strength", but in the end, I felt unfinished. You should get this CD, but it will not be excellent, but...pleasant.

Aida is probably the most beautiful love story there is (besides Beauty and the Beast). With a score filled with pop songs, soaring solos, and powerful love ballads, no music could have been composed better. In her Broadway debut, Heather Hedley's Tony Award winning performance as Aida is brilliant and nobody else could have been better. Adam Pascal does a great job as Radames(although I think his voice is suited for shows like Rent, where he playe Roger). I absolutely love Sherie Renee Scott as Princess Amneris. She is one of the best actresses on Broadway (and what a voice she has! WOW!) Anybody who loves musicals should have this CD. It is a wonderful show and a must have.
