Gr 5 Up Remarkably, this brief book explains the disease and its social rami fications as well as many longer works. It touches on the need for compassion (with photos of patients of different ages, races, and sexes), the bigotry and misunderstanding that is rampant, re search (with a good short explanation of the immune system), international statistics, the controversies over com pulsary testing and free needles for ad dicts, how the drug AZT works, and precautions. The colorful layout, with multiple photos and diagrams per page and extensive captions, clarifies the text. The prose is equally colorful and compelling; the captions could tell the whole story to browsers. Detail is ex cellent and unusual for books on the subject, such as photos of major re searchers Gallo and Montagnier and color microphotos of the virus. Large print complements the dazzling visuals. The index is incomplete, but this is still a top choice on this subject. Anne Os born, Riverside Public Library, Calif.
