Description: This monograph describes the physiology, anatomy, pharmacology, instrumentation, and technique of airway management. The focus here is alternative methods of care for the difficult airway in the operating room, emergency department, and intensive care unit.
Purpose: Proposed is a structured framework to assess the needs of the critically ill patient in regard to emergency airway management.
Audience: Senior trainees and practitioners in emergency medicine and critical care are an appropriate audience for this work. The anesthesiologist may also benefit from some of the literature reviewed here.
Features: The book's five chapters include a review of the drugs, anatomy and physiology of intubation. An important section describes techniques for confirming appropriate endotracheal tube placement. Complications of various airway management techniques are extensively discussed as well as the role of surgical approaches to elective and urgent airway placement. Chapters are clearly written. Photographs are black and white and reproduce with inconsistent quality. Black-and-white line drawings sometimes provide inadequate anatomic detail, but good use is made of tables. Each chapter is exhaustively referenced with appropriate attention paid to classic and seminal work. The most current references, however, date to within five to 10 years of publication. The table of contents describes chapter subheadings in addition to titles. A brief subject index concludes.
Assessment: This book provides an excellent review of the classic literature in this arena. For this, the work can be recommended. Shortcomings include production quality in some of the illustrations and the lack of currency of the exhaustive reference lists.
