Description: This is a major revision of the previous version of the AJCC Cancer Staging Manual that was published in 2002 and went into effect in 2003. This edition is effective for cancer cases diagnosed on or after January 1, 2010.
Purpose: Proper classification and staging is essential to enable physicians to assign proper treatment and evaluate results of management and clinical trials. The manual also serves as the standard for local, regional, and international reporting on cancer incidence and outcome. It is the fundamental reference to ensure that all those taking care of cancer patients are fully versed in the language of cancer staging.
Audience: This is an indispensable reference for those who care for cancer patients. The intended audience includes medical students, resident physicians, medical and radiation oncologists, pathologists, surgeons, and other healthcare professionals and cancer registrars.
Features: In addition to the primary sites covered by the previous edition, this edition contains quite a few new chapters for previously unclassified sites. These include, among others: mucosal melanoma of the head and neck, appendix cancer, gastrointestinal stromal tumor, neuroendocrine tumors, Merkel cell carcinoma, and adrenal cancer. For some disease sites (such as breast and prostate), relevant markers supported by evidence and of sufficient impact for treatment decisions have been included in the staging definition. Other notable features are a concise summary of changes in the TNM classification and "Staging at a Glance" on the fist page of each chapter, providing a snapshot of staging and coding detail, numerous new line drawings, full-color text to highlight elements of TNM, stage grouping, and prognostic factors, and a CD with an digital version of all the staging forms.
Assessment: This edition is more user friendly than its predecessor, with new definitions of previously unclassified sites and major revisions of existing primary sites. This manual is a must for any healthcare professionals who care for cancer patients. Significant changes in cancer staging require replacement of the previous edition.
