About the Author

Cate Dean has been writing since she could hold a pen in her hand and put more than two words together on paper.

She grew up losing herself in the wilds of fantasy worlds, and has had some of her own adventures while tromping through the UK, and a few other parts of the world.

A lover of all things supernatural, she infuses that love into her stories, giving them a unique edge.

When she's not writing, she loves cooking, scaring herself silly in the local cemeteries, and reading pretty much anything she can get her hands on.

There - I got the official biography out of the way. I love to write, and yes, I have been doing it most of my life. I've made up stories in my head for as long as I can remember, and I am thrilled to be able to write them down and share them with you.

I love writing different types of stories, and jump from fantasy, to paranormal, then over to romance and young adult. So many genres, so little time...

I really enjoyed this book. The teen angst felt real, as did the parental concern. As is often the case, I wish my parents had been so cool! I read a lot of different genres but I don't often take the time to read YA books. Boy, I'm glad I did! I liked it enough that I bought the Claire Wiche series, even though it isn't YA. Get this book and read it! I look forward to the next book in the series.

I'm an old 'Buffy the Vampire Slayer' fan from when Daughter #1 was a young adult, so whenever I come across a book that's got many of the same elements, I do this little happy dance before passing the book along to Daughter #2 and #3. [*Yes ... I'm talking censorship. I censor what I allow my YA kids to read.*] Alex Finch: Monster Hunter is a fast read that will suck you right into the storyline of a Junior in high school who finds herself smack dab into a strange little Paranormalville. In this installment of the story (I do hope there will be another?), Alex gets attacked [by a werewolf who turns out to be a relative of the hottest guy at school (hide spoiler)]. Thus starts a death defying race to figure out the town's sordid secrets, who is a paranormal, and which can be trusted versus which ones are homicidal. Unlike many (unfortunate) stories these days where supernatural creatures are romanticized, these monsters are monsters, even when the monster is one of the good guys in their supernatural form. These paranormal creatures share the Jekyl/Hyde lack of control of the origin-stories of these paranormal creatures, and even the good paranormal creatures do not sparkle! Another nice element is that while Alex is wary of involving her parents in her troubles, it turns out her parents (especially her father) are really cool (though she still gets grounded). It's nice to see a book where the kid realizes they can go to their parents for help (and it's believable) and the parent actually does help without sloughing off their concerns. And there are other 'stereotypes' that turn out not to be so stereotypical after all. I'm looking forward to the next book in this series. The book has been passed down to Daughter #2, and when she is done, Daughter #3 is champing at the full moon to read it. A Howling Good 5-Stars

The Monster Files, by Cate Dean Alex is a snarky, sarcastic, knows-her-own mind, self professed tomboy, 16 yr. old strong female MC. A VERY refreshing change in a female character from most other YA/romance stories. The premise: Alex and study partner Misty, the school's head cheerleader, get attacked by a werewolf. Sam, (Alex has had a crush on him for years), a fellow class-mate rescues them. And from there, the mystery continues. There are monsters beneath their city: The Haven. Aptly named, since it was built as a haven for monsters and other mystical and mythical beings. Great story: characters stay in character, there is character development, the writing is crisp and concise, story flows nicely and doesn't stagnate or veer off on unnecessary tangents. I have recently read several YA stories, and this is BY FAR THE BEST I have read. No whinging, no misunderstandings, no temper tantrums. Honesty, loyalty and honorable characters in this one. Throw in some suspense/mystery and this is a gripping read.

Not my type of book but it was well written with well developed characters. If you're into zombies & vampire books, I'm sure you'll like this book

I read this as part of a boxed set of several authors. From the very first sentence I was hooked. I could not put it down and immediately bought the next two in the series.

Good book. Loved the characters, although it felt like someone should've smacked Sam upside his head a few more times.

I haven't read YA novels very often lately, but the paranormal aspects caught my eye, so I gave this book a shot. I certainly didn't expect to enjoy it so much that I would read the whole book Christmas night! The characters are really interesting and realistic, the teen angst actually helps the story instead of making it feel silly (as an adult), and the paranormal aspects are really well done - fascinating, creepy, and very surprising. I just bought the next two in the series and look forward to seeing how the storyline progresses. I definitely recommend this book.
