Overview

Alex in Wonderland by Michel LaCroix

Meet Alex Sumner, 26, handsome, rich and engaged to Camilla Spivey, one of the most beautiful women in New Orleans. The only problem -- and it's a humdinger--is that Alex is living in the closet and when the wedding bells get deafening, he hightails it to Key West. Along the way, he meets Cord Foster, big, strong and on the skids. Cord has charm to burn, and Alex falls in love for the first time, but the honeymoon is over when Alex's dictatorial father puts bounty hunters on his son's trail.

Dragged back to New Orleans and forced to reconcile with the self-absorbed Camilla, Alex realizes he has to nix that big society wedding. Luckily, his partners-in-crime Jolie Menard and Angelique Poché know just the right menagerie of French Quarter zanies to make it happen.

Alex in Wonderland is a true page-turner, simultaneously funny, suspenseful, bittersweet and audacious. With a nod to screwball film comedies, LaCroix crosses It Happened One Night with Some Like It Hot. It's one wild trip down the rabbit hole that no reader—gay, straight or otherwise—should miss.

About the Author

Michel LaCroix's first novel, Alex in Wonderland, was published in 2006 by Haworth Press. Set in New Orleans, it was inspired by Armistead Maupin's Tales of the City and those wacky screwball comedies from the '30s. It follows the adventures of Alex Sumner, an uptown, uptight rich kid searching for identity in the freewheeling downtown French Quarter. Along the way, Alex encounters a host of zany characters and embarks on a journey Michel likes to call "fabulously facile."

Alex in Wonderland was an official 2006 selection of the Insight Out Book Club and nominated for a Violet Quill Award. Happily, the book was such a hit that a sequel followed in 2007, Through with the Looking Glass, which dealt with Hurricane Katrina. These two books morphed the Wonderland series which continued with the publication of Down the Rabbit Hole and concluded with Curiouser & Curiouser.

Michel lives in California Wine Country and says he's not absolutely sure there won't be a fifth book.

Tales of the City meets "gay" Alice in Wonderland...If looking for lite summer reading, and love New Orleans, it is a must read.  Sitting on a French Quarter balcony, in a New Orleans spring/summer heat turning page after page. Fall in love with his characters and love of the French Quarter!  Had me hooked for more begging for continuing story of Alex.
