Alexandreida in Rima: The Life and Deeds of Alexander the Great in an Anonymous Italian Renaissance Poem by Anne Wilson Tordi

An edition in Italian of a narrative epic written probably during the first half of the 15th century, which enjoyed wide popularity, being first printed in 1512 and continued in editions into the 17th and 18th centuries, long after epic poems as a genre had passed their peak of popularity. It was the most successful, says Italian scholar Tordi, of ten major romances written in Italian between the 14th and 16th centuries dealing with the Matter of Rome—as others dealt with Charlemagne or Arthur—and was constructed from a Latin prose life of Alexander the Great (356-323 BCE). She bases her edition on the text published in 1521 by Bernardino de Viano de Lexona in Venice, specifically on the photographed copy in the New York Public Library.
