Some folks might mistake Daft Punk's Alive 1997 -- a mixed CD lifted directly from a live set from their first European tour -- for a clever marketing ploy that repackages the same hits from their smash debut, Homework, released earlier that year. But the discerning fan will soon realize it's not how many tracks they used in the mix, but how few, that makes this limited release a valuable collector's item for diehard dance fiends and dilettantes alike. Discarding the more cautious AOR approach of their latest release, Discovery, Daft Punk seamlessly blend only three hits into a nonstop mix that invokes elements of hard acid house, French funk, '80s classic rock, and souped-up disco. Dipping into a bottomless bag of samples, triggering and tweaking them right on the spot, Daft Punk execute a brilliant one-of-a-kind performance, proving this funky French duo need have no refried associations. Treating the dance-floor hit like taffy, they stretch "Da Funk" over a 16-minute groove, looping prog-rock guitar licks over merciless beats and punchy bass lines until the track crackles like an overheated 909 tossed into a swimming pool. With "Rollin' & Scratchin'," they break down the track's gritty trademark synth line molecule by molecule, mixing in disembodied vocals and a searing high-hat blitzkrieg until the whole thing explodes as a four-to-the-floor meltdown. Like small Gallic blacksmiths reworking quality iron ore, Daft Punk mercilessly pound each nugget until they all gleam anew.
