CHAPTER 1

Myself

Who are you? That's a very, very broad question! Just for the purposes of this exploration, let's narrow that question down. In the beginning of this journey, you'll be focusing on answering statements that will relate to different parts of your life's history, leading all the way up through your present time.

Your history has helped make you who you are today. No doubt there have been certain events and people in your childhood and throughout your life that have potentially influenced things ranging from your likes and dislikes to what type of work you do now. Sometimes it is hard to really understand just how much our history has had an effect on our present lives.

This section of your book gives you a chance to explore those very topics. Here, you'll take a trip back through memory lane, all the way back to your childhood and into different particular events that have been key points in your adult life up to now. You'll also explore what your daily life looks like and feels like right now.

Remember, if you come upon a statement that you feel doesn't directly apply to you, simply fill it out with whatever comes to your mind as you read that statement. You may find that some of these statements remind you of people who were around you as you grew up. If that happens, you can make a mental note (or a written one if you prefer) of any particular observations that come to you at that time. But the primary focus of this section is looking at parts of your own personal story and how you have related to that story.

It's true that we can't change the past, and maybe you've heard that there's no sense dwelling on things in the past. But I want to ask you to consider another perspective here. Sometimes the past has had more influence on our present lives than we might realize. Sometimes we can carry ways that we act, or things we think and feel, throughout our lives when we are actually in a place to grow out of them. And sometimes we do these things without realizing it.

Sometimes we also pick up patterns in society that are popular or mainstream, and we may follow them for much of our lives without truly considering why we are doing so or if it is in our best interests to do so. We may trust big names, authority figures, or society as a whole to provide information and direction for us about what we eat, what we watch, what we listen to, what we read, how we spend our time, how we act or don't act in certain situations, and other important matters of health and well- being. While it can be good to be trusting, it is also very important to open ourselves to looking for additional perspectives and learning about ways to do things that we may not have thought to consider if we've been quite trusting of our society's or other mainstream ways of living.

It's easy for us as human beings to follow daily routines and keep habits once we establish them. But maybe some of our habits just don't fit us anymore. If we keep doing them, we might find ourselves often struggling in life. It would be like trying to keep putting on a shoe that is a few sizes too small for us. We'd struggle and struggle to try to get it on, and if somehow a part of it did fit, it would be very uncomfortable to walk in.

It can be similar in life. We can keep doing the same things, thinking the same thoughts, and feeling the same feelings for years even if we could be ready to grow out of them. The catch is that we get so used to doing these same things that sometimes we don't even realize when we're ready to keep growing.

There's no doubt that growing out of old habits and growing into new ones can be really scary. It's that way for everyone. We've grown used to the old habits. We're comfortable in them. We know that we could change; however, maybe we're scared, or we just don't know how.

If you've felt this way at different times in your life, it's totally normal. You're definitely not alone! But I want to encourage you that you have everything you need within you to grow out of ways that might not fit you anymore and grow into ways that do. It's all about bringing these habits and patterns up to the surface of our minds so that we can see them with a fresh perspective. It is then that we can decide to change them or even if we want to change them and realize what the benefits of that change might be.

Looking at our past in a new light can actually help us in our lives right now. We can better understand who has influenced us a lot, or why we do some of what we do. Maybe something happened to us in the past that really changed the way we viewed a part of our lives. Maybe we learned to view life in a way that may no longer be helping us now. Maybe we're holding onto some hurt from a situation in our lives, and we don't know how to let it go. When we stop to look closer at our past, we have the chance to realize these things and a new chance to move forward. We also have a chance to look at the important people in our past in a new light. Maybe we can better understand now why they did or didn't do certain things, or maybe we can at least make better estimates based on our experience of them.

When we can see ourselves and others in our lives with better understanding, we can open ourselves to making peace with our past and how it has influenced our present lives. We can start to see that we've tried to do the best we can with what we know. Maybe we can even see that others have tried to do the same. We can choose kindness, and first and most importantly we can learn to be kind to ourselves. We can learn to let blame, shame, and guilt go. We can believe more greatly in our own goodness and our own capacity for shaping our lives, no matter what we've been through.

Maybe you just don't know if you can really do those things. That's okay. Remember, this book is all about your journey and your process. It's also about opening yourself up to possibilities. I want to guide you in discovering just some of what is possible in your life going forward.

Maybe you've already taken different times to look at your life. If so, I want to encourage you to take this opportunity again here in your book. You may get even more perspective, and fresh perspectives can be really helpful. We humans are dynamic beings, and we can change a lot even day by day. We might now be able to recognize or understand something that we missed or couldn't see before. We always have the chance to grow and to learn new things each and every day we are alive.
