All-American Hot Rod: The Cars. the Legends. the Passion. based on 0 ratings. 1 reviews.
Before they became the ultra-smooth, perfected, primped trailer queens with modern conveniences like heat, AC, and radios built by expert craftsmen; hot rods were the rarely safe, quasi legal, home built jalopies used for everyday transportation by a generation of post war teen age boys who couldn't afford the land yachts Detroit was pumping out at the time. Before NASCAR, the NHRA, and the SCTA, hot rods were illegally raced on the city streets and speed tested on back country roads. The All-American Hot Rod contains articles and essays by Michael Dregni, Robert Williams, Gale Banks, Pat Ganahl, Albert Drake, David Fetherston, Steve Hendrickson, and more, that will bring you back to that time. This book is a recollection by the guys who lived it at the dawn of custom car building when the speed industry was in its infancy. There are many captivating color photos of retro and modern hot rods along with vintage black and white pics from back in the day. Also included are cool old advertisements from Hot Rod Magazine, Rod and Custom, and the like. There are many neat, often humorous illustrations depicting rods in action, as well as killer speed shop and hot rod parts logos. This sprawling work covers all the bases including a section on hot rod films from the 50's and 60's, hot rod fiction by Henry Gregor Felsen and others, Hot Rod comic books, as well as the influence rodding had on that other seedling craze; Rock `n' Roll music. It's all here. While reading this masterpiece I felt like I had entered a time warp and was somehow transported back to the 50's. I could imagine myself tearing down an open country road, banging through the gears in a hopped up '33 Ford roadster with the roar of the pipes in my ears, and bugs in my teeth. If the smell of gasoline and burning rubber turn your crank; and the roar of a thundering flat head is music to your ears, then The All-American Hot Rod is the book for you.
