A very funny, hard-working, and talented guy-- So why did I give this book only 3 stars? It got boring. While I liked the premise of having his many different dummies weigh in on his story, it got tiresome reading accolade after accolade after accolade. Everything he did seemed to meet with success, and every success led to another and another and lots and lots of money and all the stuff that money brings. This is a great success story, but it would have been more interesting to see a mix of hills and valleys. I still like him, though. He puts on a good show.

When Jeff showed up at my door he was eleven and a self taught ventriloquist. He was holding Paul Winchell's book from the Dallas Public Library, their only copy. (May as well be the only one in the world in Texas in 1973.) His first words were, "I'm not returning it." I told him I felt the same way on several occasions, but that he wouldn't be holding it now if I hadn't. He returned it. Not long afterwards, Terry Fator checked it out. (Turns out it was another book, "Fun with Ventriloquism," that Jeff ended up stealing from another local library.) He saw his first professional ventriloquist dummy at my house, as I coached him on psychological tips on how to let the dummy "think" thoughts for him, and control the situation, even when not with him. I knew eventually a genuine separate personality would ultimately emerge from the figure. (I was the first ventriloquist Jeff ever saw in person.)
