With Conversations, indie songstress Sara Groves turned poetic compositions and plaintive vocals into a breakout success story, capped by a 2001 Dove nomination for New Artist of the Year. All Right Here, the follow-up to that highly acclaimed release, finds Groves gleaning considerable wisdom from her recent whirlwind. The double-entendre of the title is intentional: These 13 songs make clear that Groves has survived being an overnight success, with all the pressure that implies; on a deeper level, she urges listeners to look to God, family, and friends for what's important in life, not at such ephemeral things as, well, being an overnight success. All Right Here seems to take a folkier approach than Conversations; here, Groves's vocals call to mind fellow midwesterner/folkie Claudia Schmidt more than Shawn Colvin. The tone is immediately set with the opening track, "Less Like Scars," a song that begins with the fitting line, "It's been a hard year, but I'm climbing out of the rubble." Here Groves remarks on how we grow as God turns the sourest of lemons into sweet lemonade; later, on "One More Thing," she reminds us in the chorus that "at the end of your life, your relationships are all you've got." Groves does indulge in a little bit of preaching: "Every Minute" bemoans the loss of simpler times, but the ideal she sings of -- "four generations happily living in one house" -- seems more fantasy than reality. At the center of it all lies "You Cannot Lose My Love," a piece about God's constancy around which all the other songs revolve. With All Right Here Groves has taken the next step in presenting her artistry to the world.
