Overview

Whether you're interested in what veterinary school is really like, or what it's like to dodge a 15-foot python, you've got to read this book! Strap on your stethoscope and prepare to enter our private little world like you never dreamed you could. Many have imagined it, but few have lived it, until now. This is the delightful story of a modern American veterinarian from his beginnings with animals to his veterinary school experience, and his trial by fire in the real world. Follow the adventures of Dr. John Rossi, a nationally known exotic animal veterinarian and author, as he deals with cool animals and their sometimes-colorful owners. Feel the human side of veterinary medicine; live with him through both some very funny and very intense experiences. From his teenage days to veterinary school, and beyond, this book is truly a walk on the wild side. You'll feel like you're standing right next to him in some of his vet school classes, wondering if that's really where you want to be. You'll join him for late night surgeries and some truly unique cases. You'll follow him into the wilderness as he hunts for unusual animals to learn more about their care. You will live with him as he is challenged by professors, employers, journalists, clients, employees, heartbreak and even a tornado! His unique struggle will inspire you, warm your heart, and make you wonder if you really have what it takes to be a vet! You'll sense the fear, feel the frustrations, and know the compassion that go along with this noble, but very exclusive profession.

About the Author

Dr. John Rossi DVM MA is a practicing small animal veterinarian in Jacksonville, Florida. He has eight published books to date on animal care, and is presently working on number nine, which is set for release in 2012. In addition, he is the author of nearly one hundred articles in the field of herpetology and reptile medicine. An energetic speaker, he has given scores of talks across the country on a variety of topics, and lectured four years at the North American Veterinary Conference, the largest veterinary conference in the world. He has also taught vertebrate biology as an Adjunct Professor at the college level. Having degrees in both zoology and veterinary medicine, he has gained a unique insight into understanding the requirements of many small animals in captivity, and his desire to share that experience has made him a valuable resource. Some of his other accomplishments have included several national television appearances on Animal Planet and local television, where he has appeared before 120 million people as an authority on the human - animal bond. In addition, he has been quoted frequently in both lay and professional articles. He is also the founder and past president of the Jacksonville Herpetological Society. Recently, he has become an outspoken critic of governmental policies which have led to unnecessary animal suffering, a reduction in the quality of their medical care, and displacement from their homes as their owners are displaced from their homes and jobs. He is also an amateur botanist and an avid gardener with a special interest in palm trees, agaves and cacti. An explorer at heart, his true avocation is traveling to far away places in order to study the habitat and habits of many animals that he cares for as a doctor. Some of these adventures are told for the first time in All Things Cold and Slimy.
