Erin Rose wakes up in an apartment she doesn't recognize to a face she doesn't know and no idea of how she got there. Knowing she lives in a world where there are two factions of vampires, the Spectavi, who only drink synthetic blood or from a willing victim, and the Sanguan who only drink from humans, willing or not. Erin spends a year working at a job so she can try to figure out what happened to her and whyshe has no memory of the past. With the help of new Sanguan friends Erin infiltrates the Spectavi world to find out who is telling the truth. The idea of this book is very good, the writing style works very well but the Erin character was just annoying. The build up was great but Erin's character was all black and white with no shading. Good try and a was a pretty good way to spend an afternoon in the sun.

Once I started this book, I had a hard time putting it down. It had good momentum and unexpected plot twists. I found the worldbuilding really interesting - I love vampire lore and vampire origin stories and this one was fairly unique in my opinion. I did feel that there were too many religious overtones, especially with Erin. Since she only remembers 2 years of her life, how did she come to have such a strong conviction? But overall, this was a great read that rises above the cliches of vampire fiction. I can't wait to read more about this world!

Not worth it

I love vampire books but this one fell flat for me. The main character was just kind of blah. I also wasn't a huge fan of all the religious references. I don't know, it just wasn't for me.

The first book in a series, 'Alone' follows the life of Erin Rose, a 22-year-old woman who wakes one morning to find that she has no memories of her past and no knowledge of who she is. The only clue she has to work with is a vampire bite on her neck. She is determined to find answers about her old life and what has happened to her, so she begins to question different vampires around the city to see if any of them know her. Instead of giving her the answers she so desperately seeks, her questions eventually lead her into the middle of a centuries long war between the two kinds of vampires - the Spectavi, who only drink synthetic blood, and the Sanguans, who drink from humans. Just how far will Erin go to find out her past? Perlow did a great job with this book. While the characters were rather two-dimensional and the twists in the plot predictable, the story flowed well and was very easy to read and get into. The novel raises thought-provoking questions about morals and ethics and also questions the religious aspects of vampires and where they would fit into God's plan. The religious aspect and questioning really had me thinking at times, and it was a welcome diversion from most vampire stories that I have read before. Some avenues of the story were left unexplored, but hopefully they will be followed through in some of the upcoming books in the series. All in all, this was a good vampire novel that has the reader eagerly turning pages. Disclosure: I received my copy of this book free from Library Thing. However, this had no effect on my opinion of the book or my review.

"Alone - Vampires and the Life of Erin Rose" was a topsy-turvy kind of book. At first I was so excited to read it; it was an original storyline, had a relatable main figure, and hinted at the sexual tension this book should have used to make it that much more daring and naughty. By the middle I was confused: what is wrong with her? It was kind of like when you watch a scary movie, and you joke about the fact that the character is walking into a dangerous scene: can't she hear the scary music warning her of impending horror? From the middle of the story on, that's what I was thinking: can't she see that this new line of thinking for her is stupid? By the end of the book I was just irritated; what an idiot girl, and frankly, what a coward. While Steve Perlow did an awesome job with just about every other aspect of this book (the flow of the story was great; the structure of the book, down to each individual sentence even, was perfectly engaging; the presence of nicely timed twists and turns; etc.), the story just went to pot after the amazing beginning. While I must admit that I never had to force myself to keep reading (so great is his writing ability), for the majority of the book I simply had to keep re-reading sections to assure myself that yep...this is really what's happening for some unknown (and possibly asinine) reason. For all my dislike on this issue, I will again reiterate that Perlow's writing is fantastic; while the character's actions wound up irritating me to now end, I can definitely see a good chunk of readers finding it understandable and intriguing. Simply because of his writing ability, I will be looking into the next book in this series - with the fervent hope that they do not wither into sad, cowardly antics that the book, frankly, did not need. Also, a little bit more of the racy bits (even just a wee bit more) would have made the adrenaline keep a-flowin'.

This book was so weird

In the beginning up until page 190 or so Erin was getting on my nerves acting all naive and dumb as if she didn't have common sense. At least in the end she found some sense. As for the book as a whole it was an interesting take on vampires and will probably be a good series.

Characters you sympathize with and can believe in, a religious regime with mysterious motives, and a huge grey area of good guys and bad guys. Cant wait to see where the author takes this next.
