Set in the 1930s, Alta Fay's Allegiance tells of the joys and struggles of a Midwest family, primarily through the eyes of one of the family's daughters. It's relatively short, but it will stay with you, like a well-composed poem. The story is told as a series of anecdotes, but the main characters are drawn together for a heart-wrenching scene near the book's end. The characters are real and compelling, and the setting elegantly stark. A couple of the chapter transitions are a little awkward as the omniscient narrator's viewpoint takes a few sentences to grasp. Overall, though, it is a beautiful story, and the title scene leaves the reader with a taste of the "what might have been" emotion that haunts the story's young protagonist.
