About the Author

STEPHEN ROMAN K.C.S.G., LL.D. was born in Slovakia in 1921. He emigrated to Canada at the age of 16, where he worked as a labourer before starting to build his business. He is now chairman of the board and chief executive officer of Denison Mines, Ltd., which owns one of the world's largest uranium mines. Long active in Church affairs, Mr. Roman was honored by Pope John XXIII, who bestowed on him the order of Knight Commander of St. Gregory the Great. He is chairman of Roman Corporation and a director of Pacific Tin Consolidated, Inc., Fiberboard Corporation, and Crown Life Insurance Company. Mr. Roman is also chairman of the Slovak World Congress and honorary chairman of the Canadian Folk Arts Council. He is Honorary Director, Royal Agricultural Winter Fair Association Of Canada. He lives in Unionville, near Toronto.

EUGEN LOEBL was also born in Slovakia, in 1907. He became a leading Marxist theoretician in Czechoslovakia. As head of the Ministry of Foreign Trade he came into conflict with Stalinism, and was sentenced to life imprisonment in the Slansky trials of 1952. Released after 11 years, he was appointed director of the State Bank in 1963. After the events of 1968, he migrated to the West. He then became professor of economics and political science at Vassar College, where he remained until his retirement in 1976.

His books include Mental Work, The Real Source of Wealth; Stalinism in Prague; The Intellectual Revolution; Marxism, Boon or Dead End; Economy at the Crossroads; Humanomics; and My Mind on Trial.

Mr. Loebl is a member of the Board of Advisers of the Slovak World Congress. He lives in New York City.
