There is a world that runs parallel to our own, a world in which the souls of the damned are caged, where they are looked over by the Furies, and where they spend eternity in torment, mirroring the devastation and mayhem they created when alive.

Someone has opened the cage.

The worst of terrors has crossed the barrier that separates our world from theirs, and the Furies send a great, albeit untested warrior—their only son, Alek—to try to bring those souls back. He is young and handsome, headstrong and impulsive, and he won't be able to do it alone.

Eva has grown up, beautiful and beloved, but surrounded by secrets. First, she will be hunted in an ancient feud that will threaten her life. Then, she will become the hunter.

With the police closing in and two worlds on the verge of crumbling around them, Alek and Eva must find each other, discover the limits of their powers, and work together to save everything they hold dear, including one another. Blending elements of mythology with the dazzling storytelling that her fans have devoured through the HOUSE OF NIGHT series, Kristin Cast weaves a spellbinding and passionate tale that starts a thrilling new series with an explosive charge.

Amber Smoke by Kristin Cast is the first book in the Escaped series. The Furies (Maiden, Crone, and Mother—the phases of women) lived in Tartarus. They are the jailers who keep the evil (those who threatened to end humanity) contained. But then the Maiden fell in love with Galen Argyris (he gave up his soul for his son). Their true love (which was forbidden) has cast a curse over Tartarus (infected it) and prisoners have escaped. Maiden goes to Hera for help. Hera gives the Maiden a son, Alek who will be a warrior. He need to bring back the prisoners that have escaped. Alek will need to work with Eva. Eva Kostas is a descendant of Pythia (first Oracle of Delphi). The two need to work together to end the darkness/curse. But first Alek needs to find Eva before the hunter does. Can Eva and Alek complete their mission and save Tartarus? I found Amber Smoke to be juvenile, flat, and cheesy (especially the romance between Alek and Eva). The characters did not feel real (they were not developed or fleshed out). They never came alive for me. The dialogue is stilted and awkward. I’m afraid I found the novel to be silly and just not for me. It sounded like a good book, but I just did not enjoy the final product (I finished it though). One scene that seemed especially ridiculous was when Eva and Alek find each other. They have people chasing them and they need to move quickly (run), but they stop to share a kiss (they are about to be captured). I found myself laughing. I give Amber Smoke 2 out of 5 stars (did not like but good idea). The worst part is the novel ends with a cliffhanger. Normally, these would ensure I read the next book. But in the case of this series, I will not be reading Scarlet Rain. I received a complimentary copy of Amber Smoke from NetGalley in exchange for an honest evaluation of the novel.

The premise is good. The writing is terrific. I wish I liked Alek better. I loved Bridget too bad she isn’t the female lead, Eva is okay and has potential. The story left me hanging. Not good enough to rave over but not bad enough to give up on. I will probably give the next installment a shot.

Amber Smoke is a story about a modern day descendent of the Pythia, Eva, being saved by the son of the Furies, Alek. The Furies send Alek to the human world to save it from the evil that escape Tartarus. The original Pythia tells Alek that he needs Eva, a descendent of the Pythia or he won’t be able to save the world. Eva is captured by a serial killer after leaving an attempted date rape. This story just wasn’t for me. The premise had me 100%, it was in the telling that it lost me. It was slow moving, at around 1/3 of the story Alex is finally going to find/save Eva, not to mention the outrageously cheesy dialog that had my eyes rolling. In the end, it did have some good parts but overall it was just an okay read for me. I received this ARC copy of Amber Smoke from Diversion Books in exchange for a honest review.

Wow. Just WOW! This book was amazing! I loved that a Greek mythology underworld was combined with the modern day. While reading the story, I found myself holding my breath in anticipation for what was to come at times. But I was also laughing out loud in many parts at the dialog between the characters. Amber Smoke was nerve-wracking, funny, and touching. It was very well written and clearly explained the history of Alek’s mythological world without being confusing or bogging the story down in details. The characters were well developed and had great personalities. Alek made me laugh many times with his lack of understanding of the modern world. Bridget had a great snarky attitude, and Eva was down to Earth and very brave. The dialog between then was always entertaining. I cannot wait for the next book in this series! There is still so much story to be told, that it will be awesome!

I found it a tad slow! Maybe I will be in the mood for it at a later date.

I loved the House of Night Series, and was super excited when I heard about this new series from author Kristin Cast. It was different than I expected. I will admit it took me a bit to get into the storyline, but I was sucked in by 25% of the book. I found that I really liked the two main characters and the sidekick. Eva and Alek were such a cute mix of characters, yet they longed for each other! It was interesting to read. As soon as the book hit about fifty percent, I couldn't look away. It was such a good book! When it was over, I was sad. I was so into the story, I didn't want it to end. I can't wait for the sequel! I hope the author writes fast to bring us an amazing second installment! I'm giving Amber Smoke five glittery stars!

I like where this story is going, this book was very much a tease for a more involved story. I do like books that have elements of Greek mythology; except for the ones where the gods are complete a-holes, so I liked that aspect of this story, and the action and mystery to the story kept me reading. What I didn't like was the character development, I didn't feel anything for the characters, they felt flat, no depth. Eva was immature and made bad decisions, and the same with her friend, Bridget, she's the typical party girl best friend. Why can't the main female leads ever have a best friend who isn't guy crazy, and who doesn't act like there isn't a care in the world except for what to wear? Bridget wasn't quite that bad though, so I actually still kind of liked Eva and Bridget, as odd as that sounds, I did like that they weren't teenagers because I feel it opens the characters up for more plotlines, but at this point, I don't really care what happens to the characters. Eva did start to grow on me a bit, and I liked Alek, and I liked Eva and Alek's interaction. I just hope there aren't a whole bunch guys that get thrown at Eva; it would be nice to not have a love triangle of some type, but I won't hold my breath. I think there's lots of room to grow for the characters in this series, and maybe that's the author intention to have some not so fab characters in the beginning, who grow into awesome characters as they evolve. Which is fine, as long as it doesn't take to many books to get to it. I also hope this series isn't going to be a gazillion books, I like 3 or so books, and not much more; it starts to become boring and annoying when a story goes on to long. I will read the next book because as I said the actual plot kept me interested, and I sense the plot is just getting started, and I have hopes that the characters will show more depth. I feel like the action is just getting started! Interesting beginning to a new series I feel I will enjoy reading!

Kristin Cast’s Amber Smoke brings a tale based on Greek mythology to life when the human world and the underworld face complete destruction when terrors are escaping from the cages of Tartarus and spreading their evil across the veils. A hero from each realm must come forward, chosen by the fates or by ancestry neither will be prepared, but as time runs out, they must learn to trust and work together. How does a woman from the mortal world come to grips with her godly heritage trust in a man from the underworld, who claims to be the son of the furies. Are either prepared to take on evil? Kristin Cast has built a world of fantasy, populated it with a cast of characters that run from mythological beings with haughty attitudes and fierce powers to an unprepared warrior who has never really been tested and a human woman who has no idea what is going on. If you enjoy the world of the gods and the conflict they bring to the human world, the brilliant scenes that Ms. Cast creates will spark the imagination with all of the what-ifs we can escape into. In this first tale in a new series a firm foundation has been set from each scene to the characters involved as everything was fleshed out and colored in. As the action began, and the meat of the story took shape, there promises to be a lot to escape into in each subsequent book. Being patient has its rewards when fantasy is involved! I received an ARC edition from Diversion Books in exchange for my honest review.

I read this synopsis on Net Galley and snatched Amber Smoke right up! It reminded me of another series that I love, so I was worried it wouldn't live up to my expectations. This was nothing like the other, but I was pleasantly surprised. Can't help but feel for Eva & Alek. Mythology, mystery, romance, and laughs add up to a great story. I'm looking forward to the next in the series.

I received a copy of this book via netgalley in exchange for an honest review. When one is raised knowing that their sole purpose it to save both the Underworld and the Mortal Realm it can be a burden as well as give one an over inflated sense of self-worth. Alek is not your normal man, he was born for a specific purpose and his mother is one of the Fates. When he comes of age it is time to find the new Oracle who will help him save both the Underworld and the Mortal Realm. Finding her has to be exact. He must find her right before she is about to perish and then breathe new life into her bringing her into her full powers. Tricky at best impossible seems more like it. When Eva left her house that night she never dreamed how her life would change. Abducted, tattooed and changed way beyond anyone imagination. When she wakes up in a hospital room making a miraculous recovery she learns that she has been irrevocably changed and that someone is on the hunt for her. A vision tells her she needs to find HIM. But who is HE? How could he possibly help her? When Alek finally finds Eva he has his work cut out for him. I mean who would believe he was an immortal warrior sent to save both worlds? Will these two manage to get their act together in time to save both worlds? Will the evil that has already escaped the Underworld be too much for them to handle? How can they track these evil forces down and return them if they are constantly being hunted both by humans and Others?
