In some cultures, young children are included in all family festivities, no matter how late. In other cultures, children are routinely sent off to bed. Amelia's parents exclude her from her mother's 30th birthday celebration--a glamorous garden party with live music--and she is very sad and lonely. When her parents find her asleep there in the wee hours of the morning, they realize how important the occasion was to her and resolve not to exclude her again.
