Overview

From the birth of photography in 1839 to the dawn of the 21st century, here are over 1,000 incredible photographs of life and personalities in the United States. Decade-by-decade, here are the people, known and unknown, who have shaped the country. Here also are extraordinary images of the breadth and beauty of the land that has defined us as a people and a nation. Offering 1,024 pages, this unprecedented and comprehensive work is the first book of photographs to focus solely on that which is truly worthy of celebration — our accomplishments, our joys, our triumphs, our natural and man-made wonders.
America! A Celebration covers the entire range of the country's most important vintage and contemporary photography — from works by pioneer landscape photographers Timothy O'Sullivan, Carleton Watkins, and William Henry Jackson to 20th century masters such as Walker Evans, Gordon Parks, Dorothea Lange, Jacob Riis, Weegee, Lewis Hine, Slim Aarons, Marion Post Walcott, and Ernst Haas.
Featuring photographs drawn from Getty Images, one of the world's greatest libraries of illustrative material; a foreword by Walter Cronkite; and fascinating narrative commentary on each photograph by prestigious photohistorian Martin W. Sandler, America: A Celebration! is an uplifting journey into the American experience.

Author Biography: Martin W. Sandler is the author of more than thirty books, two of which have been nominated for the Pulitzer Prize. These include American Image, written in conjunction with the Eastman Kodak Company in celebration of the 150th anniversary of photography, and The Library Of Congress American History Series. Sandler has won many awards for his television work, and was the creator and co-writer of the acclaimed This Was America series. He has taught at both the University of Massachusetts and Smith College, and major exhibitions of his photographic discoveries have been held throughout the country.
Walter Cronkite, legendary as the "most trusted man in America," retired as anchorman of the "CBS Evening News" in 1981. As recounted in his 1996 autobiography, A Reporter's Life, he began his journalism career as a newsboy and worked variously as a print reporter, radio newsman, sportscaster, and news bureau chief in Texas and the Midwest. He covered World War II and the Nuremburg Nazi war crime trials for United Press, after which he reopened its news bureau in Moscow. Two years later he joined CBS's Washington, D.C. affiliate, and in 1950, entered the nascent medium of television for CBS News, ascending to the evening news anchor slot in 1962. He held that pinnacle for almost 20 years. Cronkite, now 83, remains with CBS News as a special correspondent and also hosts and produces numerous documentary programs for PBS and the Discovery Channel.
