American Legends #9: Billie Holiday

American Legends #9: Billie Holiday

by Billie Holiday

The Billie Holiday entry in Laserlight's American Legends series suffers from the usual disadvantages: It is short, containing 35½-minutes of music, variable in terms of sound quality, and practically unannotated. It also enjoys the usual advantage, price, as well as an unexpected one: Drawing recordings from Holiday's Columbia and Decca catalog, as well as unknown sources, it is one of the few Holiday albums not limited to one record company's vaults. Containing familiar Holiday songs like "Good Morning Heartache" and "God Bless the Child" as well as collaborations with the orchestras of Benny Goodman, Teddy Wilson, and Paul Whiteman, this is a reasonable sampler of Billie Holiday for the total neophyte who wants to spend the minimum to get an idea of what Billie Holiday sounds like. But it's too scattershot to be given a pick designation, even at that discount price.
