Seattle is under siege by masses of living dead, and the military struggles to prevent the virus from spreading outside the city.
Kate is tired of sitting around. When she learns that a rescue mission is heading back into the chaos, she jumps at the chance to tag along and put her unique skill set and, more importantly, swords to use.

Lester finds a new way to deal with the situation: ignore reality with drugs. When he manages to find himself threatened, he joins with an unlikely ally to take the fight to the dead.

Meanwhile, Mike makes use of his journalistic skills to find the source of the virus, in the process discovering a way to escape the city. Two mysterious words fuel his mad quest: Lazarus Black.

Among the Dead was a good follow-up story to the first book. The group that survived from the first book (Mike, Lester, Kate, and Grinder) continue their survival adventures separately. It picks up from the stadium safe zone that they made it to at the end of book one. Kate goes on a rescue mission with some military personnel, as a volunteer. It changes Kate profoundly. She was and is my favorite character. The others come in a close second though. Mike helps out with perimeter control and makes an important friend. Lester and Grinder find themselves in over their heads again and meet a very colorful character. The epilogue was stramge and didnt seem to fit. Was it a dream or real for Kate? Where does that leave our group of survivors? A bit confusing. I suspect it was a lead-in for book 3. Overall, I liked the 2nd book called Among the Dead. You do need to read this in order since it is heavily based on a continuous chronology. Alternately spoken, it wont make much sense otherwise. It is not as fast paced as the first book. And, since everyone is off doing their own thing it can be a little hard to follow at times. But I recommend it to non traditional zombie fans because there are fast & slow zombies that seem to be slowly evolving. Unique way of storytelling that is pretty compelling. -AvidReader
