There is a lot of ways to write about Amsterdam. The author's path through the history of Amsterdam points to a unique hinge that defies the darker threads of human history and for once human events turns away from the old world order to a new path of individual enterprise and freedom. There is a lingering sense that when all told the author's story may point to a realm of novel moments that opened the door to a path towards democracy, and yet it seems it could have turned out altogether differently. It is what I would call humanity's lucky break. We are still living that lucky break. Therefore I can not recommend highly enough the importance of this book about a critical turn in human history.
