A Year Without a Duke

The duke has died. Long live the duke! The only problem is no one knows who the new Duke of Beckworth is. All of England wonders, but no one more so than the people who depend upon Beckworth for their livelihood. In 1816, a year so cold that the word "summer" is a cruel joke, that livelihood is even more uncertain. However, they are all about to find out, with the duke away, there is nothing more warming than scandal and love...

An Affair in Autumn, Book 4

On a mission to locate the missing Duke of Beckworth, Lord Markus Hawkins boards a ship bound for America, where he finds himself trapped in close quarters with his childhood friend-turned-enemy, Caroline Addison. Caro is headstrong, frustrating, selfish, wickedly intelligent, and so damn beautiful Mark can't see straight when she's near. Torn between wanting to kiss her senseless and wanting to strangle her, Mark has no idea how he's going to survive the torture of the long weeks ahead.

A missing duke leads a man on an adventure into uncharted territory. In more ways then one. A friendship turned sour leads to a contentious relationship and an awakened attraction that neither saw coming but are finding it harder to resist. Jennifer Haymore creates a hot-tempered adventurous couple with Caro and Markus. Pride is what has turned them to enemies, maybe close quarters and fate can help them become more. An Affair in Autumn is story of healing and romance that is witty and magnetic. An entertaining draw.

I quite enjoyed this fourth story in the Year Without a Duke series, consisting of 5 novellas written by different authors but linked with an overall story arc (though it's easy to read them as a standalone romances). Unlike the first three in the series, the majority of this story takes place aboard ship, as Mark and Caro, childhood friends with Nate whom they will be seeking in America, repair their fractured friendship and admit their true feelings for each other. I loved the descriptions of the ship and their sometimes treacherous ocean voyage. As well, I enjoyed seeing them give into their buried attraction with some sexy love scenes. As well, I'm suitably intrigued enough to want to read more of the House of Trent series, and learn more about Mark's family. 4 stars.

A Year Without a Duke - Book 4 Caroline (Caro) Addison, Lady Whytestone, is a very rich widow who loves to spend her husband’s money on things that she knows he would have hated. The man had been chosen for her by her father. A much older man, he was very opinionated. Lord Marcus (Mark) Hawkins, brother to the Duke of Trent is calling upon Caro to share some news with her. The new Duke of Beckworth has finally been found and the man’s name is Nathaniel (Nate) Hughes and he lives in New York in America. Nate, Mark and Caro have been friends for years. As a matter of fact, Mark had hoped to be more than just a friend to Caro but was shocked when she married the rich viscount. When Mark visits Caro and tells her of Nate’s new title, he also tells her that he is planning on sailing to New York to find Nate and tell him the good news. A letter would not be fast enough because there is a possibility that Nate may be going somewhere else. To his surprise, Caro says that she is also planning on sailing to America to find Nate. The time is August but everyone is bundling up because this has been a very cold summer. The trip starts out well but they encounter some rough seas that leave some people seasick. The close quarters and long trip means Caro and Mark spend a lot of time together where they relive old times and they realize that they are very attracted to one another. Soon, their attraction sparks a love that cannot be denied. Will they find a future together? Will they find Nate to share the good news with him? This is the fourth book in the series. This is book 4 in the A Year Without a Duke series, a multi-author series. Markus Hawkins is bound for America in search of the new Duke of Beckworth. After telling Caroline Addison about his trip (Caroline, Markus and the new Duke had been childhood friends), he never imagined that she would also buy passage on the same ship. After Caroline's marriage, her friendship with Markus had deteriorated, but she wan't going to let that stop her from finding the new duke. But spending time with Markus again, brings forth all the feelings she has kept to herself over the years. What happens when they both realize that the feelings they have for each other is much more than the childhood friendship they shared? This is the fourth book of five that tells the story of the residents of the Duke of Beckworth's estate. Having read all 5 of them, I would definitely recommend reading them all together, although they could each be read as stand alone. I really liked this story. You've got two former friends that haven't seen each other in years because of something that one of them thought about the other (don't want to give too much away!). During their voyage to America, you get to see Caroline and Markus get to know one another as adults who have a little bit of life under their belts. This was very enjoyable read! Thanks go out to the author for a copy of the book in exchange of an honest review.

Friends in the past separated by marriage, misunderstanding and several years without seeing one another, Caro and Mark meet again in England before setting off on what will become the common mission of finding Nate, their childhood friend and the next Duke of Beckworth. Caro and Mark have always felt something for one another but never really realized what it was or what it could ultimately lead to – their happily ever after. Sailing on a ship to America will provide them with plenty of time to become reacquainted while spending quality time together. By the end of the journey their relationship has changed significantly, they find Nate and send him back to fulfill his role as Duke. Nate and Lizzie are mentioned as the next and final segment of this wonderful sequence of stories revolving around A Year Without a Duke. I have never read any of Ms Haymore’s books but after reading this novella I am definitely going to see if I can find more to read in the future! Thank you to NetGalley for the copy of this book to read and review.
