I love anthologies! I know that some people don't and prefer to skip them. But for me, the stories found in anthologies add to the particular series or world that they're set in. They may contain more of the series backstory than is contained in the main series novels, perspective from other series characters, or sometimes it's just a slice of life from our main characters that we wouldn't usually get to see. And if you're really lucky...and actually read all of the stories in the anthology...you may stumble across a new series that sparks your interest. I so enjoyed An Apple for the Creature! All the stories have a school-theme with a paranormal twist. When I picked it up, I got it because it had "Magic Tests" from the Kate Daniels series by Ilona Andrews and "Playing Possum", a Sookie Stackhouse story, by Charlaine Harris. I did a happy dance when I realized that Faith Hunter had contributed "Golden Delicious" from her Jane Yellowrock series. Those were the first three that I read (yes I skipped around a bit) and all three were terrific. "Magic Tests" is told from Julie's (Kate and Curran's ward) POV and "Golden Delicious" focuses on Rick LeFleur. Both stories do a wonderful job of expanding our view of the world the series are set in. "Playing Possum" is pure Sookie and it reminded me of why I fell in love with Sookie in the first place. Once done with those, I went back to the beginning and read the rest. I enjoyed them all...some a little more than others...but all were well written. But I was intrigued by "The Bad Hour" by Thomas E. Sniegoski. This is a story from the Remy Chandler series, which I hadn't heard of before. Remy is an angel, one of the Seraphim in fact, who has chosen to leave Heaven and live on Earth as a private detective. One of the powers he has chosen not to repress is the ability to speak any language, including that of animals, so he can talk with his faithful Labrador, Marlowe. "The Bad Hour" takes Remy and Marlowe into a mystery surrounding a dog trainer and her school. You all know what a animal lover I am, so I was hooked immediately! As soon as I finishing it, I ordered the first of the series so I can read more of their adventures. Pick up An Apple for the Creature, you'll enjoy it!

Playing Possum is a short story in the Sookie Stackhouse series by popular American author, Charlaine Harris. Sookie delivers to her nephew Hunter’s classroom, twenty-three perfect cupcakes for the class’s Labor Day party, and meets his new teacher, young Sabrina Yarnell, who has certain attributes Sookie immediately recognises. When Sookie and Hunter return to the car for goody bags, they become aware of another arrival, and not a benign one. Sookie instantly realises her priority is the safety of the children and staff. What could be a major tragedy is cleverly averted by the combined efforts of Sabrina, Hunter and Sookie. An excellent little dose of Sookie (and Hunter).
