"Jo Beverley strains the boundaries of political correctness . . . There is no denying Ms. Beverley is a master storyteller and perhaps because of this political incorrectness she delivers a powerfully fresh stage for her story." ~Tara A. Green

Ruined through her vile brother's schemes, Eleanor Chivenham is offered rescue by marriage to a rake with an infamous French mistress. Eleanor accepts, determined to treat the arranged marriage with cool dignity.

Then she meets Nicholas Delaney. Not only does he stir her senses, but the trouble and pain beneath his smooth exterior reaches her heart.

Nicholas is indeed troubled. While serving his country by seducing secrets out of a French spy, he is persuaded to marry Eleanor to protect his family's honor. But such chivalry runs counter to his carefully wrought rogue image, and extends the life-threatening plots shadowing him to Eleanor.

To assist, Nicholas re-assembles the Company of Rogues, a schoolboy group he started years before. But not even they can dampen Eleanor's fighting wit that is quickly unmasking their enemy and testing Nicholas' formidable will.

I usually like jo beverley, but this book was sad and depressing right up to the end for me. The heroine was badly mistreated by every man in her life, includding tthe so called hero, who cheated on her constantly. I dont admire the wimpy forgiving of everyone who never apologized, including the man who raped her. She was a weak character, and the men not worthy of the word hero.

On of the best books I've read in a long time and I would highly recommend it. This is the type of book that you don't want to put down and I will keep it for future reading pleasure. I look forward to reading more of this author's excellent writing.

To be honest, i enjoyed the book a bit, but it agrivated me that Nick was having sex the entire time with another woman, even though it was for buisness. This slightly grossed me out, and i feel as though Eleanore handled to situation too..... easily? I feel like the story was a little unbelieveable, but over all the book was okay, if you like that sort of thing. :)

I love Jo Berverly but I couldn't finish this one. The beginning was poorly written, melodramatic even. Not her usual excellent fare. I'll still buy other books of hers --- some are top shelf keepers, but not this one.

I read this book after reading three other books in the series and decided I should check out the first one. I was less thrilled with this one than the other three I read. It's ok. But not the best in the series.

I have just reread this novel for the second time and still find most of the negative reviews unfounded! Even though it begins with a forced rape on both parties involved through the use of drugs, the rest brings out Nicholas' sensitivity to Eleanor's feelings in a very honest way! He has been involved in a plot with the government before he meets and agrees to marry her but always tries to honor her feelings! JB does not elaborate on the rape scene so I don't understand what all the fuss is about. Both parties were victims which is actually interesting in itself. I enjoyed all the characters and their personalities and will most likely read it again someday! LORRAINE 2018

VERY HARD BOOK TO READ!! Be warned there is a rape scene in the very beginning of the book. I truly had a hard time liking Nicholas, and thought Eleanor forgave him so much to quickly. Yes, he agonized over what he HAD to do, but I felt he got off to easy. This is not your normal romance with only a few bumps in the road, the whole road is very rocky in this story. I love the secondary character's a lot and added a lightness to the story. The lovemaking, is mild, but certainly discussed what is going on more than doing, especially about the mistress. This is not a light read, it is very emotional. I kept trying to remind myself the time period I was reading and not putting my ideas of the 21st Century. (ljb)

I had just read a Jo Beverly book, I had liked very much, so I purchased this one. I wish I had not. I found very little to like in this depressing novel. I can not say anything nice about it, other then it was well edited and a nice length. I have gootten more pleasure from cheap toilet paper. Chick lit. Ages 18 and up, due to some adult content. It is pretty bad when the romance and sexual escapades in a hysterical romance, leave the reader yawning. ( yes, I meant hysterical, not historical) AD

Hard to find the romance in this book, none of the characters are even likable.  Rape in the beginning followed very quickly by a way too convenient marriage plan that was oddly put together.  The marriage consummated so immediately  there was no time for romance.  For a better review please read  the one posted on Nov. 17, 2005 titled "An Arranged Disaster if you ask me"  I agree with the author of that review wholeheartedly.

Ok book, but I wanted to punch Nicholas for being a sneaky jerk and slap Eleanor for being a spineless whiner. If u decide to read this book just understand that you will be compleately annoyed through the entire book. This story had the ability to be good, but just never developed. Just happy it was a nook free Friday book!!

One of my favorite Jo Beverly books. I must have read it at least a half a dozen times over the years. I love the dilemma Nick faces, and Eleanor's strength. Nick is the kingpin of the Company of Rogues books. His character is brilliant, a coruscating gem throughout the series. Highly recommended if you are a lover of Regency romance. And if you aren't, this book just might change your mind.

I liked Nicholas and Eleanor. This is the first book I have read where the husband is actually having an affair to help his country. The rape involved both parties being drugged, which made a difference to me. After reading the reviews, I would try another book in the series.

I enjoyed the book, but the misgivings about the plot are valid. Having reread the book after many years and read the entire Rogue series, I enjoyed revisiting the beginning of the series. The plot, however, does push the reader into accepting an unpalatable premise...That of a practical woman dealing with an inept villian, a strong belief in herself while her situation required she marry her betrayer, and the surprises she has to deal with in confronting her situation. I really love the characters and enjoy the HEA, but the plot is not for the faint hearted.

I love this series. The characters are interesting and the story has the right blend of heat and suspense. The Company are a great group of equally flawed and fascinating characters.

Jo Beverly is an author Whose books I I purchase without a second thought. The characters become friends and the plots are fast paced and highly entertaining. Nicholas'patriotic fevor may end his brief marriage as well as end his life. I am in awe of Eleanor's ability to read between the lines as her heart is torn by his bad behavior!
