In life there are choices…
Spinster Iris Hedley was once the darling of the ton until her father lost his fortune through an illness of the mind. Reduced to living as a penniless guest while her father rots in debtors prison, she's determined to escape unscrupulous robbers who've set her to spy on the ton by the only means possible—by becoming a wealthy mans mistress. Unfortunately for Iris, her proper upbringing never covered intimacy or seduction so she asks the one man she trusts for help with private lessons in the duties of a mistress.
…in love there is but one
Martin Andrews, the Earl of Louth, may have a soft spot for tiny Iris Hedley, especially after her father fled London with a horde of debtors nipping at his heels. Her request for lessons in seduction leaves him reeling and although tempted it's an offer he must refuse for her own good. Convinced she's headed for heartbreak, he sets out to prove that surrendering to wicked pleasure is not worth the sacrifice of her future only to discover that her problems are more complicated than his own.

This is book 6 in the Distinguished Rogues series. With her father in debtors prison, Iris Hedley is forced to what is necessary to survive. She has been spying on the ton for an unscrupulous robber, but knows that she can't do that any longer. She decides that only way to survive is to become a rich man's mistress. She asks the one man she trusts to teach her everything she needs to know for this new role. Martin Andrews, the Earl of Louth, can't believe that Iris is asking for his help in learning how to become a mistress. He sets out to convince her that this road is not the one she should take. He didn't count on falling for her himself. As Iris and Martin get closer to each other, Iris is worried that Martin will learn the truth about what she has done to survive and the location of her father. Will Martin's feelings change when the truth is revealed? I really enjoyed this story. Iris was not your typical society miss. She didn't want to live off of the woman she was staying with. She felt like she needed to provide for herself. She got into some trouble trying to keep her father safe, but didn't know how to get herself out of the situation which leads to all kinds of drama. I liked Martin. He had known Iris since she was a kid and felt like he needed to protect her. Lucky for us, his need to protect her turned into something more! I can't wait to see what Boyd has in store for us next! Thanks go out to LLD Press via NetGalley for a copy of the book in exchange of an honest review.
Many years ago I became hooked on historicals after reading Laurie McBain's book, Devil's Desire. Various authors through the years have fed my addiction. After reading Heather Boyd's fantastic story in An Improper Proposal I know my addiction will continue. Ms Boyd has given us a well written book that includes great characters, drama, a bit of action and let's not forget the sexy bits. I loved this book from cover to cover and I'm glad to have another writer of historical novels to follow. This was my first Heather Boyd book, but I look forward to reading more from her in the future. An Improper Proposal is a complete book, NOT a cliff-hanger. I received a copy of An Improper Proposal from a third party in exchange for an honest review.
Iris Hedley as gone from darling of the ton to ruin. Her father is in debtor’s prison and her only option is to become a mistress to a wealthy man and spy on the ton. Being inexperienced in seduction she asks the Earl of Louth to teach her. Excellent historical romance, fast paced and the story and the characters are excellent. Great Read!
