Lady Evelyn Montgomery, only daughter of the Baron of Rayne, detests the thought of marriage and vows to never allow a man to control her. To escape the constraints of propriety, she steals away from the safety of the keep and stumbles across a plot designed to ignite tension between England and Scotland. When a mysterious hooded man steps in to save her, she must decide if he is friend or foe, and if he truly means to aid her despite his charm and the burgeoning attraction between them.
Hiding beneath his black cowl and blending into the night, Gabriel, a Shadow Guardian, is bound by honor and duty to protect the Baron's daughter at any cost. But Lady Evelyn is far from the delicate flower he anticipated. When he confronts her with his admiration, she remains steadfast in her determination that no man will possess her. He must convince her love can be more than possession before the traitor tears them apart and he loses her forever.

About the Author
Stick her in the middle of a chaotic home with two children, a hyperactive dog, and a camouflage wearing husband, and she can cook and clean with the best of them. But when the sun goes down and the children are nestled in bed fast asleep, she tucks away her pots and broom and like Cinderella she transforms. Her characters creep forth from the dark recesses of her mind taking their places in the castles and forests built from her words. No simpering heroines linger there with forlorn gazes turned to the horizon, waiting for their Prince Charming. They straighten their spine, arming themselves with blade and bow, prepared to do their part in defense of their honor and destiny. She breathes life into the women she believes our ancestors to be, showing how they lived and loved with passion and grace. Never bored by the tales still left to tell, she battles the ever sarcastic muse in her quest for romance.

This was a great debut novel by a new-to-me author. I really, really liked this story. In fact, I read it in two evening sittings...I just didn't want to put it down. I like my romance heroines to be feisty and strong, and Evelyn was definitely that for sure. And I like my romantic heroes to be equally strong, but with a spirit that embraces the qualities of women and becomes a teammate rather than an overlord in the relationship, and Gabriel was a swoon-worthy hero that I liked from the very beginning of the story. I liked the bit of mystery in the story and a bad guy that was really, really bad so that I could root for the good guys! This story had all the elements of a terrific story and enough action to keep me riveted to the pages until it ended. Sigh. I recommend this author and I'm planning on reading the rest of her stories.
* Received from author for an honest opinion. Four stars “An Irresistible Shadow” was a great read. I enjoyed the hero and the heroine. Lady Evelyn Montgomery was a very strong female character. She definitely walked to the beat of her own drum. Gabriel, a Shadow Guardian, provided the perfect balance for Lady Evelyn. They had excellent chemistry and had great adventures. The historical background of the conflict between England and Scotland provided a great underlying story. The author blended the romantic and historical aspects perfectly. The writing was engaging and the plot very original. I would recommend this novel and I highly enjoyed it.
I am generally hesitant on trying on "new2me" historical romance authors. The fear of a mousy, submissive heroine gives me hives. The blurb offered me a promise that happily was not broken. Lady Evelyn was a warrior in a dress. She could handle a blade and hand to hand with the most experienced of warriors. She knew her own mind and was determined to bow to no man. Yay!! She also had a sharp tongue, sarcastic wit, but was also kind and compassionate. Gabriel was a doll, open, not afraid to express his emotions and totally head over heels for Evelyn. It is hard to go into a great deal of detail without giving away some major spoilers. (which I NEVER do) He wants Evelyn to be the woman she herself wants to be, but he does have some big time convincing on his hands. He also must guard her from her own fearlessness. The only thing she is truly afraid of is losing her freedom. This keeps Gabriel busy. The story itself moves very quickly and is full of action. There are conspiracies, lots of plotting and plan devising, with a goodly dose of fairly hot romance. (smoking but not too, too graphic) There are some memorable secondary characters who, I am 99.999% certain get their own book that I am looking forward to a great deal. If you are a fan of strong heroines and their devoted heroes, you will certainly enjoy An Irresistible Shadow. (it's right there in the title)
This book was awesome.....
