4.5 stars A number of years ago, a cozy author who's long been a favorite of mine, Dean James (aka Miranda James and other pen names), started a new series with Posted to Death, the story of an American vampire who is gay and able to medically control his vampirish tendencies. When he moves to a small English village, he falls into sleuthing when the nasty postmistress is murdered. The name of the village is Snupperton Mumsley and Simon Kirby-Jones is also a bodice-ripping romance writer which gives you just a taste of the humor to be found, humor which had me (and a lot of friends) laughing out loud. Unfortunately, the series didn't fare well so it ended after the fourth book but, ever since I've been on the lookout for something like it. Occasionally, I find a book that comes close but not quite. An Unconventional Mr. Peadlebody is another of my attempts and, while it doesn't quite fulfill my quest, it's quirky enough to grab and hold my attention. There are laughs to be had here and I really like Ms. Gardner's assortment of characters that aren't your usual evil, bloodsucking fiends. Think of Uncle Gerald, a half vampire-elf mix or of a woman who can turn living creatures to stone. Perhaps a gorgon? A family as dysfunctional as it's possible to be, a mansion that's falling to pieces, a butler with tattoos and piercings...what better milieu for investigating an untimely death, that of Gerald's father, a full vampire? In fact, did he really die? And when, or how, is Gerald going to get his next, er, meal? I thoroughly enjoyed my time with this collection of creatures and the humans who live amongst them, not to mention the mystery of what really happened to Granddaddy Peadlebody. Will there be a sequel? I don't know but I really do hope so ;-)
