An Unexpected Role by Leslea Wahl This book is a must read! Josie thought she was escaping her problems when she left for South Carolina, but her troubles were about to get a lot worse. When her Aunt Lily brings up the string of thefts happening around the island, Josie should have hopped on the first plane for home. But how could she know the robberies would invade her life as well? She's happy she came ... especially when she meets a handsome young man who is working for Lily's friend, Tom Mullens. And Niko isn't the only attractive boy on the island. Ryan McNaulty came all the way from Josie's town to play baseball for the local team. As the story progresses, Josie starts falling for Niko while keeping Ryan at bay. He represents the terrible kids at school who mocked and teased her. But then she starts spending time with Ryan, trying to solve the crime spree that has hit the island. Maybe she was wrong about him... Leslea Wahl paints an accurate picture of high school life. The reader feels for Josie, who is undeserving of the other kids' cruel teasing. It's understandable that she wants to get far away. When Niko responded to Josie's attention, I was happy for her. And I enjoyed watching Josie and Ryan bicker as they tried to figure out their rocky relationship. Mixed in with the romance is a mystery that keeps heating up until it finally boils over and someone you would never expect gets burned. This author knows how to speed up your heart rate and raise your fear level as she puts her lovable characters in jeopardy! The book was far from predictable. It had twists I never saw coming. It has a wonderful story line that keeps you guessing. I definitely recommend this book. It's very well done. The publisher has provided me with a complimentary copy of this book through BookCrash.

Josie's mother is a famous author who uses incidents in Josie's life as inspiration for her book. Her fellow students picked on her about the latest book and Josie felt she needed to get away. She went to visit her Aunt in South Carolina. Josie's dream of getting away from home and the book vanished when she met a young girl on the island who is her mother's greatest fan. She also found out one of the students, Ryan, from her school was in the area to play ball for the summer. When Ryan wanted to spend time with Josie, she felt he was just trying to get information that he could send back home about her. While she was with her Aunt, her mother sent her post cards with Bible verses on them. Those together with the sermons Josie heard at her aunt's church helped Josie realize she needed to turn toward God in prayer and she needed to have faith that God will help her be who He wants her to be. This is a really good book, written for teens. This book is full of adventure with the break ins that happened on the island. The “who done it” factor holds the readers attention to the very end. The book also has a little romance. This is a good clean story with great life lesson, I would recommend it for teen girls, but it will be enjoyed by adults as well.  I received a free copy of this book/Ebook/Product to review. Reviewed by Patricia Bell for Readers' Favorite An Unexpected Role is a YA story by Leslea Wahl about a sixteen-year-old named Josie. After her mother’s book comes out, Josie is teased incessantly by the entire high school about the antics in the book because they believe the stories are about her. Who could blame them because her mother has been writing about her awkwardness for years. After her boyfriend dumps her, her phone is bombarded with pranks, and her best friend leaves her to spend the entire summer with her father, Josie finds herself needing to get away. Believing that her mother has ruined her entire life, Josie heads off to visit her aunt who lives a carefree life on an island off the coast of South Carolina. As she makes new friends and investigates a sudden rash of robberies, Josie comes to some life defining realizations. Wow! I don’t know where to start! Leslea Wahl has managed to intricately weave a beautiful web of relationships, trust, love and… musicals. What could be a better combination than that? An Unexpected Role contains all the aspects of a truly amazing story. Josie learns a hard lesson from young and old alike. She finds out that things aren’t always what they seem, and that even though her problems seemed like the end of the world to her, in the grand scheme of things they are minute at best. As Josie sets out to unravel the age-old mystery of “who am I?” she learns some hard lessons. Want to hear more? Read the book! You won’t be disappointed. A true delight!

Leslea Wahl has done it again - another great book custom-tailored to teens (teen girls in particular). I'm always a little put-off by present tense narration, but I quickly grew to enjoy Josie's voice. Great writing peppered with humor and insight, the author captures the human tendency to hyperfocus on our own problems that can be part and parcel of the teen years. Take a mortifying yet hardly life-threatening problem, add an alluring backdrop of sunshine, sand, and an attractive guy, and watch Josie's self-preoccupation melt away as she forges relationships with those outside her narrow Minnesota high school circle. Her summer escape is populated by people of different ages, races, and backgrounds, and not everyone - even those she thinks she knows - is what they seem. There's a nice little mystery that keeps the story moving, but the most touching moments involve Josie's self-discovery, the softening of her heart, and, eventually, genuine romance with an upstanding guy and reconciliation with her mom. Enjoyable for adults, highly recommended for teens. Bonus if you're a fan of musical theater.

I just finished reading AN UNEXPECTED ROLE by Leslea D. Wahl. I can’t believe I read it in one day, but it was that good from beginning to end. I mean, this book is absolutely hilarious! For me, as a writer, I love that the main character’s mom is a writer! And poor Josie decides her mom is ruining her life because everyone at school thinks the embarrassing stories in the book are about her. More than anything, Josie wants an escape. And she gets one which has the potential to be everything a girl could want. As the fun plot moves forward a mystery begins to develop, then the tension really starts mounting. In addition to being fast-moving and at times hilarious, this novel has incredible descriptions. Since I read this as summer is dwindling down, I really appreciate the beautiful imagery, the beaches and ocean view. It lets me hold onto summer for a wee bit longer. But this story is also filled with life-lessons that are totally relevant to young adults--well, to me too. This book is a fun and rewarding read!

I won this book from Goodreads Giveaways! I do not receive any compensation for my honest review. This is the first Leslea Wahl book I have read. Overall this was a lighthearted, fast read with lots of laughs. It was a little “cheesy” in the first chapter. But once Josie leaves to spend the summer with her aunt on a island in South Carolina the story pick ups. Once she has started her summer on the island the jokes start to role, a love triangle develops, and a mystery is solved. There were a few twists and turns I thought were going to be predictable that the author took in a different direction making the read even more enjoyable. I enjoy escaping with a good YA. In my opinion, this particular story is more fitting for teens rather than adults that enjoy YA.
