Overview

"Once in a while I substitute my name into the stories and impress my friends with all the fun stuff that has happened to me." -- Gary McCord CBS Sports "Lots of hearty laughs. . . . Recommended for sports collections." -- Library Journal This new collection from the author of the bestselling "And Then Jack Said to Arnie . . . " brings out the locker room and onto the tee an engaging treasury of more than 200 of the greatest golf stories every told--stories about tough lies, great putts, and amazing recoveries--from the game's greats: Ben Hogan, Nancy Lopez, Fuzzy Zoeller, Tommy Bolt, Fred Couples, Lee Trevino, and others. You will learn about Harvey Penick's advice to a young Tom Kite, the humorous antics of Bob Hope and Bing Crosby at the famed Pebble Beach Golf Links, Jack Nicklaus's superstitions, and Seve Ballesteros's bout with the press. From Augusta National to Royal St. George's, this entertaining, intimate, and just plain funny book will take you onto some of the best courses alongside the greatest players in the world. Don Wade, a senior editor at Golf Digest magazine, has been covering professional golf and collecting true stories about the game since the 1970s. He has written books with Ken Venturi, Sam Snead, Amy Alcott, and Nancy Lopez. He lives in Stamford, Connecticut. Paul Szep is a two-time Pulitzer Prize-winning cartoonist.

Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
Storytelling is alive and well among golf professionals, and fortunately there is more than enough here of general interest. Don Wade gives us a moment of the past recaptured by compiling both sad reminiscences (Roberto de Vincenzo recording his scorecard incorrectly on the 17th hole at the Masters) and lots of hearty laughs by Seve Ballesteros, Chi Chi Rodriguez, and Will Rogers. Alhough they may strike some as a little dull, personal glimpses into the lives of the golf professionals emerge. Wade has done a remarkable job of selecting over 200 stories, but what is obviously missing here are stories about more women golfers. Only two are mentioned--Nancy Lopez and Babe Zaharias. The book provides a valuable service by bringing this together in one volume. Recommended for sports collections.-- Jim Paxman, Tennessee State Univ., Nashville
