Overview

Andy Irvine and Paul Brady

Two masters of the Irish story-song together on the same album, and a really fine one it is. "Arthur McBride," the tale of two happy-go-lucky ramblers who make short work of a British recruiting posse intent on pressing them into the king's service, never fails to delight -- Paul Brady's ambling acoustic guitar figures perfectly complement his earnest, homespun singing voice. Mandolist/multi-instrumentalist Andy Irvine turns in some fine lead vocal spots as well. He does true justice to "Plains of Kildare," the ultimate long-shot story recounting a legendary 1790 horse race also immortalized in a host of American "Skewbald" (or "Stewball") ballads. On "Martinmas Time," the uplifting tale of a golden-haired virgin who foils the lewd plan of some crafty soldiers encamped near her home, Irvine and Brady's tandem vocals are sublime in their ruddy harmony. Bouzoukist Donal Lunny and fiddler Kevin Burke offer strong instrumental support, and some of the arrangements on this 1976 session hint at the Eastern European hues that have colored Andy Irvine's later music. The playing is top-shelf, and the songs are all intriguing and rarely covered. There's not a dull spot on this gem of a record.
