“Julie Anne Long reinvents the historical romance for modern readers.” Amanda Quick

From USA Today bestselling author Julie Anne Long comes the second book in an exciting new historical romance series, the first since her beloved Pennyroyal Green series.

He has devil’s blood in his veins. At least, that’s always been the legend. How else could the Duke of Brexford’s notorious bastard son return from the dead? The brutal decade since Lucien Durand, Lord Bolt, allegedly drowned in the Thames forged him into a man who always gets what—and who—he wants. And what he wants is vengeance for his stolen birthright . . . and one wild night in Angelique Breedlove’s bed.

Angelique recognizes heartbreak when the enigmatic Lord Bolt walks into The Grand Palace on the Thames, and not even his devastating charm can tempt her to risk her own ever again. One scorching kiss drives home the danger.

But in the space between them springs a trust that feels anything but safe. And the passion—explosive, consuming—drives Lucien to his knees. Now his whole life depends on proving his love to a woman who doesn’t believe in it . . . because his true birthright, he now knows, is guardian of Angelique Breedlove’s heart.

I loved the Pennyroyal Green series – I’ve still got books to read in it, but I have the whole series. For me, this series was a no-brainer to grab – and I loved the first in the series. Now we have Angelique’s story, who we first met in Lady Derring Takes a Lover, and the friendship between she and Delilah provided them both with courage and growth. Now Angelique has her own moment to shine, with a man who is reputedly brutal, uncaring and cold. But she’s seen different – she knows different – and it will only take courage and determination to make a choice that could change both their lives forever. Lucien Durand, Lord Bolt, was thought to have drowned in the Thames some ten years past. He didn’t – but used the time away to refashion himself, emerging as a person who always gets what (and whom) he wants. Calculating, determined and ruthless – he wants to reclaim his birthright and nothing will stop him, but he may be diverted by his interest in Angelique and his determination to ‘have’ her. There’s no denying that their connection is electric – but can they both find the ability to trust in one another and reveal their true desires? Anger, fear and shame all characterize the underlying emotions for both Lucien and Angelique - all of it completely honest in feel and easy to understand for the reader. What sparks off the pages is the ‘rightness’ of the connection between them, even as neither has a reason to ever trust in ‘what they feel’ ever again after both had been betrayed or ill-used because of that trust. Angelique’s rather callous attitude toward the ‘words and intentions’ of men is easy to understand, and her reluctance to believe in her own worth as a friend and partner are clearly displayed, and harder to work through. The same goes for Lucien, although he has his revenge plan for his ‘abandonment’ by his father, he’s also caught in the trap of not feeling worthy of anyone else, particularly after his father’s actions. It’s worsened by Angelique’s refusal to believe in his words of affection, once he’s determined to show her how he feels, and it will take them both time to grow and understand that perhaps, words from one another, are not going to lead to disappointment. There was a lovely growth for both characters as they fumbled (often) their way through their own emotions, while there was never a question of their connection from anyone else. Without isolating their story from the larger world that was built, they get plenty of time to shine with and without each other, as characters come in and out of the story to enforce a point of how together they are, or to toss a monkey wrench in to test them. A lovely story that benefits from reading the first book in the series, even if it’s not ‘required’. I received an eArc copy of the title from the publisher via Edelweiss for purpose of honest review. I was not compensated for this review: all conclusions are my own responsibility.

it was good, not one of her best but that is ok. Even though not being among her best it is still a good read

I received an ARC of this book to read through Edelweiss+ in exchange for a fair review. Angel In A Devil’s Arms is the second book in Julie Anne Long’s delightful series The Palace of Rogues. I do think that in order to properly enjoy this book you need to read the first book. Angelique Breedlove left destitute when her protector died has reached a point where she is starting to feel secure, she has good friends, a lovely place to live, a successful business and she’s beginning to dream of better things when Lucien Durand, Lord Bolt arrives to be the new tenant in their boarding house and shakes up her hard won equilibrium with his very presence. Lucien has returned from the dead a wealthy man after an absence of 10 years, and his purpose for returning is to seek revenge on those who had him tossed in the Thames all those years ago. One of the things I loved most about this story is that when Angelique uncomfortable with the intensity of the chemistry they generate between them asks him to be her friend he agrees and they do become friends making the long slow burn of their romance a wonderful thing. I enjoyed this book immensely and it’s going to have a secure place on my keeper shelf. Medium Steam. I had enjoyed the previous book in this series and loved Angelique, so there was no way I was missing this one. Angelique is just as fantastic as I thought. She’s smart and determined and ready to settle into a new life. Lucien is all quips and bravado and in desperate need of gentleness. Together they are filled with open and honest conversations, so much chemistry it could choke a person, and the absolute need to belong to someone. Of course it was delightful to see Delilah and Dot again. Plot wise, it was great. There are a lot of longing filled stares across a room and I’m here for it. The conflict wasn’t as angsty as I was expecting, so while I spent a lot of time waiting for the other shoe to drop, it was not needed. The break up was short and the grand gestures were glorious. I would have like a bit more from the epilogue, but that’s just me being greedy. Overall, it was easy to root for these characters and I’m beside myself with happiness at seeing a former mistress get her HEA. If there are more books in this series, I’m absolutely reading them. **Huge thanks to Avon for providing the arc free of charge**
