Humanity is wiped out in less than two months.

Hundreds of strange vessels appear, unleashing an assault both methodical and efficient. Bombardment vaporizes building and bone. Invasion clears out the larger pockets of survivors. Plague finishes the last few clinging to life. Extermination complete, the azure skinned beings journey home and resume their normal lives.

Seven hundred years later, a cargo ship goes missing. A burst of static precedes the disappearance, but investigations find no trace of ship or crew. Decades pass. Then another vessel vanishes, again with the burst of static. Another decade. Another disappearance. Never a trace.

A rumor begins in the dark alleys and religious communities, spreading like fire. Most laugh when they hear it, dismissing the speaker as superstitious or overly pious; but all tremble inside. In their hearts, they know the genocide was a great crime; and where all of their technology and power has failed to provide answers, the rumor may be true.

“Angry Ghosts have come to revenge.”

I decided to read this because it was the work of a local author, and I am so glad I did! I also went out of my usual genre to read it, and it did not disappoint. The title makes it sound like a ghost story, but it is certainly much more than that. The ghosts are ghosts of the past haunting a civilization for its past wrongs toward another civilization. It has great relevance to our lives today as we look at war, consumption, and how we treat others. However, despite these heavy topics, to book manages to remain light enough to take to the beach or pull out in the evening, and I ended up past my usual bed-time to finish it. There is a little bit of romance, some battle scenes, and a surprising plot twist at the very beginning. The only bummer is the end, because its over and leaves the reader hanging, so I am looking forward to a sequel so I can find out what happens to the crew! It is touching and exciting in a way I didn't think Sci-Fi would be, and I am glad I read it and suggest you do to!

F. Allen Farnham artfully paints the picture of "Angry Ghosts" in colorful backdrops and descriptive action. Seamless transitions from scene to scene make for easy reading. Little cliff-hangers at the end of most chapters and just the right amount of conflict make it difficult to put down. The book is also peppered with thought provoking ideas concerning the rights and privileges of individuals vs. the good of society. Even with my busy schedule, I read through "Angry Ghosts" in two sittings. Perfect for the beach. Be sure to add this book to your Summer Reading List! And with such well crafted characters, you will definitely want to read the sequel (which sadly, is not yet published.) Enjoy! Nick
