"Kimmel has made a career out of being what you might call a man-translator."- The Atlantic

The white American male voter is alive and well—and angry as hell.

Sociologist Michael Kimmel, one of the leading writers on men and masculinity, has spent hundreds of hours in the company of America's angry white men—from white supremacists to men's rights activists to young students—in pursuit of a comprehensive diagnosis of their fears, anxieties, and rage. Kimmel locates this increase in anger in the seismic economic, social, and political shifts that have transformed the American landscape: Downward mobility, increased racial and gender equality, and tenaciously clinging to an anachronistic ideology of masculinity has left many men feeling betrayed and bewildered. Raised to expect unparalleled social and economic privilege, white men are suffering today from what Kimmel calls "aggrieved entitlement": a sense that those benefits that white men believed were their due have been snatched away from them.

The election of Donald Trump proved that angry white men can still change the course of history. Here, Kimmel argues that we must consider the rage of this "forgotten" group and create solutions that address the concerns of all Americans.

I'm glad that at last there are authors seeking to point out the foibles in white supremacist ideologies. There are serious consequences where racism exists, and when those who believe they deserve more are "robbed" of the privilege that has been granted to them for so long, their worlds come crashing down. It's time to quash this illusion that race exists to support or demonize another. All that hatred is a smokescreen for the rich to hide behind while they rape the earth and its people of their resources and dignity.

Kimmel does a good job describing the things which anger white men, but his attitude is infuriatingly patronizing. Kimmel is like Dr. Zira from "The Planet of the Apes" viewing white men  as worthy of our understanding, almost apelike. His theory is that white men suffer from "aggrieved  entitlement". He believes that white men are spoiled, whiny brats who can't handle the fact we no longer live in Victorian England. The book should be called "Angry Petulant White Racist Homophobic Redneck Misogynists". Kimmel fails to distinguish between "entitlement" and "expectation". An entitlement is something you expect to get for nothing. An expectation is something you expect to get because you've worked for it. White men don't feel entitled to a comfortable middle class life and a loving spouse, but they expect to have a decent shot at them if they work hard, provide, and are considerate and caring lovers. There is a strong Marxist undertone to Kimmel's writing, "I believe that the anger of the American White Man is misguided and misplaced...It is the corporate elites who fund the faux populism of hate radio, border patrols, Tea partiers, and other groups who are, to my mind, the ones who have contempt for the simple working man" (p. 12). Kimmel is shouting, "Angry white men, unite!" Of course, it would have to be because they are naive whiny brats. It couldn't be because border security matters or that "hate radio" taps into preexisting rage and doesn't create it. To be fair, Kimmel interviewed a lot of a**holes for this book, but its market is his friends in the New York liberal elite. He feels that angry white men are understandable, if wrong, but they can be turned around through reeducation. Thank you, Dr. Zira.
