PreS-Gr 1 A rhythmic listing of unusual animals (``Alligator, Hedgehog, Anteater, Bear'') makes for the catchy lyrics of Sewall's adaptation of a song collected in 1939. The colorful illustrations create the story here: they show the designated animals preparing for Crow's birthday party, celebrating, and then going on their way. Children will enjoy describing the activitieseating, singing, dancing, playing gamesas much as they will enjoy singing the song (the score is included). Illustrations in pastels, boldly outlined in black, show each of the animals as an individual. Humorous details, such as the bonnetted mother alligator wheeling her six baby gators in a pram or the manx cat in wide boxer shorts, provide visual interest. The book opens and closes with individual portraits of each animal, labeled, in alphabetical order, to help children identify the animals in the larger pictures. Animal Song will find many uses in collections for young children, who will sing its praises. David Gale, ``School Library Journal''
