Overview

These two unrelated and unabridged novels are combined into one edition. They are the only two novels L.M. Montgomery wrote specifically for adults. In The Blue Castle, Valancy Stirling is twenty-nine, unmarried, and has lived her entire life with her gossip-minded family who actively discourage happiness and treat Valancy like a child. When Valancy is diagnosed with a terminal heart ailment, she realizes she has never been happy in her life, and rebels against her family and the colorless life they have imposed on her. She begins by judging them objectively, and worse, telling them exactly what she thinks, causing the Stirling clan to conclude that Valancy has suddenly lost her mind. Valancy decides to move out of her mother's house and take a position as a housekeeper for a friend of hers who is now gravely ill, Cissy Gay. Cissy and Valancy had known each other as children, but Cissy became ostracized from society for having a child out of wedlock, and because of her father, Roaring Abel, and his reckless, sometimes drunken behavior. A Tangled Web is probably L.M. Montgomerys funniest book. It is the story of two clans on Prince Edward Island. The Penhallows and the Darks. No Dark would ever marry anyone but a Penhallow and no Penhallow would ever marry anyone but a Dark. The undisputed leader of the two clans was 85 year-old Aunt Becky Dark. Aunt Becky was the holder of the Dark Jug, a family heirloom greatly desired by everyone in both clans. Knowing she will soon die, she calls a family gathering to announce to the clans who will inherit the Dark Jug. The results of that gathering throws both clans into chaos, as each member tries to position themselves to be the one to get the jug.

About the Author

Lucy Maud Montgomery CBE (November 30, 1874 April 24, 1942), called "Maud" by family and friends and publicly known as L.M. Montgomery, was a Canadian author best known for a series of novels beginning with Anne of Green Gables, published in 1908. Anne of Green Gables was an immediate success. The central character, Anne, an orphaned girl, made Montgomery famous in her lifetime and gave her an international following. The first novel was followed by a series of sequels with Anne as the central character. Montgomery went on to publish 20 novels as well as 500 short stories and poems. Because many of the novels were set on Prince Edward Island, Canada and the Canadian province became literary landmarks. By the way, CBE is Commander of the Order of the British Empire.
